Are these the same lens?

Hello,

I've been looking at the m43 system recently, therefore I have zero experience regarding its lenses.

Looking into the Panasonic 14-140 f/3.5-5.6 lens, I found the following on amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-H-FS14140AK-14-140mm-F3-5-5-6-O-I-S/dp/B0153WGIW8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1464725957&sr=8-4&keywords=panasonic+14-140

and

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Lumix-Vario-14-140mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B00CFCTH14/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1464725957&sr=8-3&keywords=panasonic+14-140

Are the 2 above the same lens?

Thanks.

I think the latter one is for video while the former is for both stills and video.

One has Power OIS while the other has OIS (sans Power).  Power OIS is the later technology and supposedly faster/better autofocus.

So, no, they are not the same lens in that respect; but, I don't personally know of any other differences, for instance, whether they have the same internal design, otherwise.

No idea.

These are the same lens, when scroll down on the page you will find the same product number but with some cosmetic differences (black, matt black).

Unfortunately this information is not correct.

Both links are H-FS14140 with Power OIS, this is the newer (II) version.

The older version is H-VS14140 with Mega OIS. Another difference is that this lens is f/4-5.8

Re: Are these the same lens?

Both have 'Power'. My guess is the latter is designed for High-Definition(HD) Panasonic camcorders while the former is for cameras with video capability.

This is what I found in B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/750702-REG/Panasonic_AG_AF100_Starter_Kit.html

The included 14-140 for the above starter kit looks like the latter.

Absolutely agree with ernstbk: the links the OP posted are both for the Mark II version of the lens - it's just that one is in its original black livery, and the other in the more recently-introduced matte black livery - the latter has a less showy but arguably plainer finish and gives much less prominence to the HD logo, even moving it, shrinking it, and printing it in grey/silver. The earlier black version is almost iridescent in certain lights, showing the very fine milling on its trim, whilst the matte black is just a very finely textured, duller black. See here also:

They are the same lens.

What Panasonic did is apply a flat black paint and drop the HD logo from the newer version. The older (by a few months) shinier black lens has been discontinued. Why this happened, you'll have to ask Panasonic.

However, they are exactly the same lens just a different paint job.

Now, there is the original version of this lens and it IS different. Neither of your links show that lens.

Correct about not mentioning the 1st version of the lens (f/4.0-5.8). Reading online reviews, people are all agreeing that the mark ii version of the lens is the one to get.

So imagine my surprise when I went to amazon and found 2 versions of the mark ii

Panasonic de-emphasized the HD on the lens barrel because their cameras now shoot 4K - why advertise for a feature that's no longer relevant? The HD basically denoted 'video ready,' meaning that the autofocus motor is relatively fast and quiet and can be used during video.

The newer version is f/3.5-5.6, has a 58mm filter thread, and weighs less than 300g, the older version is f/4-5.8, has a 67mm filter thread if I recall, and weighs over 500g.

I don't often buy electronics on Amazon because the descriptions are such that I feel like I have to work too hard to determine that the item is the version I want. For camera gear, I look at B&H and Adorama first - I trust their descriptions to be accurate.

Right. But, there are now two versions of the "new" black lens (f3.5-5.6). The older version of the "new" lens has been discontinued. This is what is shown in the links above.

The only difference between these two "new (f3.5-5.6)" black lenses is the paint job.

Also, there is a silver version of the "new (f3.5-5.6)" lens - same lens, different paint.

Currently, all three "new" lenses are available as well as the "older f4-5.8)" lens and this is where the confusion lies.

Perhaps this is the case.

That's what I read a while back when the refresh was announced. 'HD' (or 1080p) is like "de-advertising" 4k (2160p).

The newer version is f/3.5-5.6, has a 58mm filter thread, and weighs less than 300g, the older version is f/4-5.8, has a 67mm filter thread if I recall, and weighs over 500g.

I just re-read my post, I can understand the confusion. Both of the linked lenses are the newer model, just one is pre-refresh (with HD), and one is post-refresh (without HD). Optically, they should be identical.  The first generation (f/4-5.8) can often be found around $300, if I recall. The second generation (whether it be pre or post refresh) is sharper, brighter, and lighter.

Re: Are these the same lens?

Sorry for reviving a very old thread, but I just want to confirm something.

My understanding after reading through all of this is that other than cosmetics, there is only one version of the Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Any version of the Vario 14-140mm with f/3.5-5.6 printed on the lens should perform the same.  (not to be confused with the f/4.0 - 5.8 version)

Is this correct?

So in terms of glass, performance and functionality, there are only two versions in total: The older Vario 14-140mm f/4.0-5.8 version (doesn't perform as well and heavier), and the 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 version.

Does anyone know if all the above is correct?
