Weird black/grey dot on my photos?

Hello.

As seen in the title, I have been noticing some weird dark dots in my pictures. I currently have the Canon Rebel SL1 which has been taking amazing pictures, but I've been noticing this weird gray dot in the same position on most photos. 75% of the photos I have, it's unnoticeable but when I'm taking a picture with a dark/dull background like the sky, the dot is a lot more visible.

I recently upgraded one of my lenses and still saw the same dot so I know it can't be any of the lenses, it must be the camera itself.

I've only had this camera for about 4-5 months and making sure it's clean, but the spot still remains.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? (I've also included some example pictures, depending on what I'm taking a picture of / lighting / or angle, they can become a lot more visible)

No biggie, it's just a piece of dust on the sensor. All interchangeable-lens cameras pick up dust on occasion.  It's usually noticed the most when shooting at small apertures.

Search "Sensor Dust"  or "Sensor Cleaning".

To see how much dust you have, take a picture of the sky at f/22 (don't overexpose).  Then increase the contrast on the computer as much as possible.  Voila!  Yuck!

Start by doing an auto Sensor Clean.  Then do a dust check.  It'll likely still be on there.

Get youself a good Blower (I like the Rocket Blowers).  Never ever use "Canned Air."  Remove the lens and put its back cap on.  Always use good dust management practices!

Then set your camera to clean Manually (it's in the Menu).  You'll hear the mirror flip up, and the sensor will be exposed.  With the camera pointed down, use the blower to thoroughly blow out the chamber.  Be careful to never let it physically touch any surfaces though.

Shut the camera off and remount your lens.  Do another dust check.  If necessary, "Lather, Rinse, and Repeat."

If the dust is stubborn and won't come off with this minimally invasive procedure, then either send it in for a cleaning or perform a Wet-Clean yourself.  Search "Sensor Wet Clean".  It can be a little nerve-wracking at first, but you'll come to find it's really no big deal.

Good luck to you!

Hi,

That look's like dust/dirt on your camera sensor, there is a section in your camera manual that deals with the removal of the above, also I have put a link to a tutorial on diagnosing and cleaning if the particles are still there after trying the camera's automatic cleaning mode.

Good Luck.

That looks like a "dust bunny" to me.  I've had three Canon Rebels for over 4 years and only once did I find something like that.  It was on one side, so it wasn't critical that I remove it right away.  I was beginning to read about it, to find out if I could clean the sensor myself or have it done by a professional.  What I remember reading is to be careful to do it right, otherwise further problems could develop.  Fortunately over a period of weeks, the dust bunny got smaller and smaller and eventually went away.  That's one reason I feel the in-camera dust sensor protection is necessary.  I don't normally change lenses so that may also contribute to the fact that this rarely is a problem for me (I have multiple cameras with attached lenses).  But I read anyone can potentially get these dust particles (depending on their gear).  Once I had a dust bunny on my Kodak P&S camera.  But that went away on its own and then I stopped using the camera, because later new improved technology led me to other cameras.  That ended any future problems with dust with that.  My Olympus DSLR cameras had great internal dust sensor protection, so that wasn't a problem at any time.  I'm glad that my Canon DSLR cameras appear to be performing well that way also with this in-camera dust protection.

You could have the camera clean the sensor itself over & over and see if it goes away on its own.  Hopefully, you'll see it getting smaller and smaller and then soon it will be gone.  If that doesn't work, then cleaning the sensor yourself seems easy enough, but again it's important that you do it correctly.  There's enough information about this on the internet that should help you in that regard.  If you feel that you are not good at this type of thing, you might find a camera shop to do this for you professionally.  Check them out to see what price they would charge.  I think they would charge about one hour of labor or so.  It shouldn't be a lot of money, but I wanted to learn how to do it myself, because who knows how many more times it may happen.  I'm so busy, that I still have never done my own sensor cleaning.  Thank goodness for Canon's technology to reduce this occurrence.

Re: Weird black/grey dot on my photos?

I have had 3 Powershots, the latest is the 120. They have ALL developed this after a couple of years. Since it's not possible to clean the sensor like with a SLR, I'm forced to just live with it, spend big bucks and wait for a repair, or buy a new camera. I hate to continue this cycle, but I love the teensy size and light weight of these cameras, and of course, the RAW ability. Here's a recent illustration showing how bad it's getting. You can see the two big gray squiggles in the sky and at least two more on the earth. It's funny that Canon doesn't even mention this problem in their support area, at least that I can find. When I called about it two cameras ago, they said mail the camera in and they'd replace the sensor, and it would be weeks and cost big bucks.

What gets me is that it's clearly a sensor flaw and not dust. If it were dust it wouldn't look like this, I don't think. I don't shoot in bad environments much at all.

So I am thinking of getting a Canon G9x Mark II since this clearly needs replacement. Anybody have one and have feedback? Thanks!

I think you should start a new thread with this question.

You might want to ask that question on the Canon PowerShot forum.  If you would like a Canon DSLR that is relatively lightweight and inexpensive and has dust sensor protection, consider the Canon SL2 (200D) camera.

Re: Weird black/grey dot on my photos?

Had it happen a year ago to me. I took it in for cleaning, about 40$ I think. I noticed again a bunch of spotstaking some long exposure shots.....

So instead of taking it in I ordered a sensor cleaning kit off amazon....APS-C Sensor Cleaning Kit by Rangers. Comes with 12 swabs and fluid fo 17$. Worked pretty good..

Before...

After....

Some spots remained but most are gone. I should prob do another pass.

This is not a sensor flaw.  It is in fact dust.

No it's sensor dust. Greatly helps to not put cameras in clothing po keys that can have lint to easily get in the camera. Use a camera bag instead and keep it in a drawer, cupboard,  etc

If it were dust it wouldn't look like this,

Yes it would that's a string like of something

I don't think. I don't shoot in bad environments much at all.

Storage is the issue

So I am thinking of getting a Canon G9x Mark II since this clearly needs replacement. Anybody have one and have feedback? Thanks!

I own a Canon G9x Mark II. I used it a lot, loved the camera until the 6th month. Then I had a black spot on all of my photos. I cleaned the lens but there is no way I can find to clean the sensor. I think this happens to all camera but is a really problem when they are point and shoot camera.

Simply clean the sensor.
