Pardon my asking but when you upload a picture to dpreview, don't you upload the file itself and we are looking at the dpreview viewer itself, not the OP's?

I uploaded from my computer. The Cacti is an unedited, the other is a screen grab.

I see you shoot RAW. Does it do this if you shoot JPG (full res)?

That would eliminate the viewer because you can check it out on many programs.

I just starting to shoot jpg, after years of just shooting raw. So far, so good.

The Olympus viewer software is available on Macs too. Try looking at the existing problem .ORF raw files in that? I haven't seen any mention of trying that in the thread yet. If it looks good there, I would suspect the Photos app.

You exactly right. That would be the first place to start if you want to keep shooting RAW.

For now I will shoot jpg to see what happens. I think it is how Photos handles RAW.

BTW, how good are the editing tools in the Oly viewer?

Some claim that it's the best way to develop Olympus RAW files. You get curve adjustment, noise control tools, and all kinds of color balance and intensity management.

If you shoot RAW, it's a bit of a waste to use Photos. Photos is targeted at the Instagram crowd, and shows a similar level of subtlety in its tools.

Assuming Windows 8.1, right click on the ORF file> select "Open With"> "Choose Default Program"> be sure there is a check-mark next to "Use this program for all ORF files"> click "More Options"> scroll to bottom of the the list> click "Look for another app on this PC"> browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\OLYMPUS\OLYMPUS Viewer 3> select  "OLYMPUS Viewer 3.exe"> click Open.

Click OK.

You're done.

Select the file, Cmd-I (should be "Information" in the popup menu if you right click), a bit down you'll see "open with:".

Select the program you want from the dropdown, use "different program" if it isn't in there. Then click "change all".

You don't need Windows to test. May I suggest you use Olympus Viewer 3 for converting from RAW. I have this running under El Capitan on my iMacs and Windows 10 Pro on my Dell Laptop i5. I have never seen such an image since moving to digital from film many years ago.

The comments about card errors make sense to me but if you have tried a few different brands/speeds and all the same I would recommend sending the camera back for exchange or refund. Are all images showing this same problem? Was your battery fully charged? Was your card charged in camera - it should have been as Mac OS is different. Have you tried your cards in other camera bodies, ask a friend?

I am using Mac OS and Olympus Viewer so we are both using the same system. I would give Photo a miss even though it is free, Viewer 3 is also free and much much better. Feel free to send me a RAW image, not the one displayed, and I will check it out for you.

I find Olympus Viewer to do an excellent job. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles that many have but I prefer the RAW conversion quality to Adobe Elements which I also have. I also have, and use DxO Optics Pro Elite 10, but also have the one month free trial of 11 running to compare. Worth giving the free 30 days trial a go?

Olympus Viewer does the majority of things I need and does them well. I never used iPhoto nor do I use Photo. Without spending a penny more install Viewer 3, allow auto updates then enjoy. Hopefully this may have sorted out your problem.

It happened on my EPM2 and my EM10, on different cards, over several upgrades to OSX. I even changed the usb.

Now I am experimenting with Oly Viewer 3.

I think I have found how to keep Photos from launching.
