Parade Navale 2016 - Lake Geneva/Switzerland with K-1

Hi

Well, some will notice, one year is over since my last post regarding this "Parade Navale" happening once a year on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Well, I wanted to already post these photos yesterday, but flickr was not taking any photo uploads...

So yesterday, the traditional "Parade Navale" took place on Lake Geneva. This time in front of the town of Morges, between Lausanne and Geneva. The parade this year counted five Belle Epoque Paddle Steam boats, Vevey (1907), La Suisse (1910), Savoie (1914), Simplon (1920) and Rhône (1927).

All photos with K-1 and DFA 24-70/2.8 or DFA*70-200/2.8

Very nice Dominique,

Nice touch of light, nearly high key. Thanks!

Edit: I was partly fooled by my NT screen and the angle (other than standard) I looked at it when examening yor pictures. They are a thad darker than I previously thought

Great shots of those beautiful steam boats! I lived in Vevey for a short while as kid, never forget the beauty of the region! Thx for sharing!

Nice pictures for sure, just a little bit too light for my taste. What's your reasoning behind such approach, Dominique?

Peter

in the rather dull weather, post processing was not that easy, except for the colors coming out pretty bright, the remaining of the scene had not much contrast to work with, finding the correct balance between a pleasing photo and a rather dull grey photo. At the end, I opted for a somewhat brighter approach, but not high key (yet)

Thank you Peter. Well, before the sun came out, except for the colors of the flags which render pretty bright under such conditions, the remaining of the scene offered little contrast to work up with. When reducing the exposure, the whole photo pretty quickly turned out rather grey and dull, I finally prefered not reducing the exposure too much.

I should maybe give a try at reducing the exposure a little bit more...

Hi Dominique,

I understand that just reducing the exposure would make the picture rather grey and dull. But I took the liberty to play with your first picture in my ACDSee. I applied my most popular PP action: the Lighting levels adjustment. I applied the Auto setting and your picture turned out pretty nice. I personally like such "dramatic" lighting. But again, every one has a different taste.

Peter

Hi Peter

very nice attempt, Peter. I like such dramatic lightin as well.

However, it is not only a matter of personal taste... I covered the event for the press and the photos are supposed to show more or less the reality as all spectators have seen it. I can adjust levels, adjust exposure and contrast to a certain degree. However, increasing the contrast to such a level is not a good practice as press photographer.

That's interesting Dominique,

What happens to the image quality when published (in a paper?)?

Does the picture gets more contrast and les subtlety.

Do you take that into account when processing an image?
