SX60 running CHDK?

SX60 running CHDK?

I'm considering getting the SX60 to run CHDK, which is a free firmware that allows RAW photos, timelapse etc.

Can anyone here say whether it works well with this particular camera?

The price of the SX60 is not super great, because the EOS m3 is now on sale for $550, but at least the SX60 has a huge zoom capability built-in e.g. 1365mm.

SX60 already has raw capability.

Yes and I wouldn't rush into buying the SX60, if possible.  That 'extra' reach isn't quite as advantageous as it should be.  Once over 50x things get a bit complex even with these tiny sensors.

If you can hold out until September there is a good chance the SX70 will be available.  Of course it could be another miss especially if they do attempt 70x.

I have had the SX60 and the ergonomics were very good but my present SX50 does the job at half the price.  Referb of course.  Just my 1/2 c worth.

The SX60 port is still in early development, but timelapse and most other scripting should probably work. See this thread on the CHDK forum for builds and info https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=12532.400

Currently, all digic 6 ports are missing some standard CHDK features, mostly related to the display like histogram, zebra, edge overlay etc. Aside from that, these ports should be about as functional as other CHDK ports.

Can you provide some shots that demonstrate this complexity?

Well, no, I don't have a direct comparison.  I had the SX60 for only a few weeks on a vacation shoot.  I certainly noticed that at full tele zoom that at 65x the results were less sharp than my current SX50 at 50x.  The more zoom range, given the same aperture range the sensor must be smaller.  Something has to give.  However there are many other factors to consider such as pixel density and the software.

Much of the extra zoom is negated by atmospheric haze if not by hand holding movements.  Even with the best stabilization systems there is a limit.  Presently I put that limit at 50x.  That's not carved in stone.  Improvements happen.  Also consider that like everything else a camera is designed and built to a price point.

Don't get me wrong.  I liked the SX60 but as pointed out other factors must be considered.  Price being a big one.

Not quite true.  It was just in stock a couple of weeks ago because I snagged one.  However, they are few and far between so you have to be quick.  Best bet is to sign up for "CanonPriceWatch" notifications.  You'll get an email notifying of stock (even the quantity).

Did anyone use chdk with the sx60? I'm keen to know what the max video bitrate was. Also could you do 24p/25p with the chdk?

Unfortunately, no video related functionality is implemented in the SX60 CHDK.
