Re: A teleconverter for panasonic 14-140 vii and GX7

I came to this thread 2 months later and still no answer.  Hmmm..

I have the same question.  I assume you are talking about the type that fits between the camera and the lens, and allows full control over lens functions?  (The type you screw onto the outer end of the lens barrel is sometimes also called teleconverter.  They are OK but they tend to create color cast and lower clarity of the images.)

Oly has a nice one but it seems it only works with Oly lenses and only some Oly lenses at that.  The main thing to watch out for is loss of controls (AF, etc.).

I hope one of us gets an answer somewhere.  I'll keep looking.

The only teleconverter for µ4/3 is the MC-14 by Olympus.  You are correct, it only works with the Olympus 40-150mm Pro and 300mm Pro.  More lenses may follow that it works with but right now the lens has to be designed to allow the MC-14 to fit into it.

I just read and thought I'd offer a quick response. Traditional telephoto extenders that fit between camera and lens (like the 1.4x converter for the Olympus 40-150mm and 300mm pro lenses are generally only used with relatively fast aperture lenses. With a 1.4x converter you loose 1 stop of aperture, so the lens would become an f/5 - f/8 lens. I'd be very surprised if any such device were ever offered. The Olympus 1.4x converter can only be used with the 40-150 and 300mm pro lenses and costs about $350. You'd be better off buying one of the longer telephoto zooms.

Have you tried the ETC or even digital zoom of GX7? ETC (Extended Tele Converter) is a in-camera cropped. Enabling the function, and use a smaller file size would give similar effect (but smaller file size).

Many thanks to everybody who responded. I understand that looking rof a teleconverter to my 14-140 makes no sense.

Yes, I tried digital zoom in gx7 when considered buying tokina 300 mirror lens. 2x digital zoom of gx7 and 140 focal length gave 280 mm, close to 300 of tokina. gx7 with digital zoom made better pictures in terms of sharpness and contrast, so I abandoned the idea of buying tokina 300. Tests were made in a shop, I shot a stret view some 50 m away through a shop window pane, I was assisted by a shop assistant, the gx7 was on a steady pro tripod, the shutter was released with 2 sec delay to avoid shaking.

But what would you say about a wide converter? The Panasonic 7-14 lens is rather expensive for me, more than I payed for both gx7 and 14-140. I recently like making photos inside churches and realized that wider lens than 14mm would be very useful.

...which I use with my GX7+14-140 combo quite successfully:

Photographing is never a cheap hobby.

Try 7-14 f/4 (which is much cheaper than I bought it some years ago), you would know it worth it if you need that coverage. I never fancy to put glasses of any sort of magnification on my lenses...

The 7-14mm is very expensive at RRP but can be had for much less, new, via eBay, though still not cheap. The Olympus 9-18mm is worth considering but the cheapest fun option is the Samyang 7.5mm fisheye. Many church/cathedral examples of with the 7.5mm FE and 7-14mm here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dieselgolfer/albums/72157646076479907

I have the mk1 and many other lenses, and have tried many wide angle and tele converters. Most really don't work well.

For wide shots the oly 9-18 is by far your best and cheapest option. Most teleconverters only seem to have sharpness in the very centre on my long lenses, or have strange bokeh.

Play by all means, but don't waste money on them. I have many here as paperweights!

Yes, there is hope

I have been playing around with a converters lately, and one of them that I was looking for was for the Panasonic 14-140mm MKII. Through trial and errors I found out that the 14-140mm works best with a teleconverter that has a bigger rear glass diameter than the 58m filter size of the lens. The size that produced the least errors that I could find readily available has a 72mm thread for the 14-140mm zoom. So I had to use a 58mm to 72mm step up lens adapter. The actual teleconverter is a generic one, but seems to be sold under a few different names. It is listed on eBay at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/72MM-2-2X-Magnification-Telephoto-Lens-for-Canon-30D-40D-550D-7D-DSLR-Cameras-DV-/272263835151?hash=item3f64306e0f:g:0H8AAOSwLnBXUpyK

The reason I settled on this one is because it has metal threads, instead of plastic. It is also multi coated, can take filters and a lens hood, and doesn't cost a fortune to try out. At £18.99 it is practically a steal! I tried out some far more expensive converters that were useless on the 14-140mm zoom, but were highly rated more than a decades ago.

This teleconverter produces vignetting up to about 40mm. Between 40 to 140mm there is none that I could detect in an of my images. Chromatic aberration is hard to detect at the 40mm end, and barely visible at the 140mm end. And most, if not all, of that can be removed in Acdsee 10 pro, Photoshop CC, and LIghtroom.

The combination is not as sharp as my Pana 45-175mm with Pana LT-55 teleconverter, but it is still sharp and detailed enough to rival my 100-300mm zoom. The fact that I can use Dual IS  on the GX8 with this combination has been an added bonus. I managed to get some usable hand held test shots at 1/15s at the maximum zoom length.
The sharpest area is obviously the centre section of the lens. And I would be using this converter  mainly for birding etc where the action is normally away from the edges.
It's probably the best bargain buy of the year for me. The results exceeded all my expectations.
And now I have to offload all those Sony, Canon, Olympus, and Nikon teleconverters I also bought to try out. They were mainly designed in the late nineties and early 2000 for video cameras and small sensor digital cameras. And that showed up in my trials. Far too much CA and vignetting in all the ones I tried.
