D500 SOOC

Garbage. Out of 95 shots, 4 were corrupted.

Yup, this is what I got. Invalid Image

And the hits just keep on coming.

Hmm.

Oh well.

These were written to a SanDisk SDXC ll, 280mb/s, 64 gb.

Look at the people in the car, they look like mush. Yes I know it is at 2.8,

I am getting very discouraged. I have had trouble with my 500mm, looking like mush, I went thru the auto fine tune, and lens align and think it is close, but the images look mushy, and lack detail. I have been determined to make this camera work for me, but I am thinking I got the one bad copy that slipped thru. The images above were shot with a 17~55mm nikon 2.8 lens, which works beautifully on my D100, D2x, D300, D3s, D800e. (sold the D2x, have the rest) I am not this bad of a photographer!

They look like card write errors to me, as if the card is failing. Wish I could see the full exif data. Do you have a flickr account?

Yes, they are write errors. Here is a link to the files on smugmug.
D500 corrupt files

The first image just says invalid image, and did not upload to smug. The 3 remaining should have the exif intact. BTW, the raw files were written correctly. The 'pink' shot, has a sharp edge inside of it, and the part that is on the right, should be on the left. It really only shows up during the slideshow. But here I am, after 2 weeks with this machine, and am feeling frustrated. I have it packed up and ready to ship back. I will get another one when they are available.

Can you live with RAW + JPG on XQD ?

You mean you have been shooting RAW + JPG?

The defective files were JPG written to the SD card but the RAW files written to XQD are correct?

I do not have an SD card, I shoot RAW + JPG to XQD because I do not have a RAW converter yet, so I can start working anyways. No errors on the XQD. Is that a workaround you can live with until a solution is found (probably a firmware fix)?

Do you have another SD card to try? I'm using a SanDisk SDXC 64gig HS1 95MBps card with no issues so far. My Faster Lexar SDHC card is throwing up the card error problem randomly when recording jpgs but nearly every time I try to shoot a movie. Personally I think it is linked to the battery problem. It's like the cards are not getting enough voltage to work properly although they are clearing very fast when written to. I'm wondering if the faster are trying to take more current than the camera can supply and that the draw o from the slower cards is less. This should be reported to Thom for his card compatibility analysis.

Just out of sheer curiosity, have you tried downloading NX-D? It would bother me slightly if I wasn't able to process the nefs.

so I can start working anyways. No errors on the XQD. Is that a workaround you can live with until a solution is found (probably a firmware fix)?

Have you got any other lenses you can try? (I have seen your list so consider this as a rhetorical question

I am getting stunning sharpness from Sigma A's, Nikon 70-200/4 and 85/1,8G. I have to handle Sigma A50/1,4 in mittens because last time I got a nasty skin cut from it...

Try to eliminate the lens variable. Yes, you claim it works great even on D800e, but... but...

And try to do a similar shot like this, in similar conditions, from a tripod pefectly focused manually in LV on the face after zooming the display in to rule out AF issue as well.

Re: Can you live with RAW + JPG on XQD ?

I gave up. First problems with the Lexar SDHC card errors. Problems with tuning lenses. Problem with SDXC write to card. I did a fine tune to the 17~55, and tuned it at 35mm. The shot with the batman car, the focus point was just between the top edge of the car, and part of the woman. Yes it looks a little front focused. But, considering the woman is a little out of focus, it is not just a little bit of oof blur, but very mushy, for lack of a better term. Now since I have had a difficult time with this camera, and my 30 day return period is nearing, I decided to pack it up and ship it back. This is the 6th Nikon DSLR that I have purchased. In the past I have had issues with 1 other body, a D300. After getting a new copy of that one, I realized it wasn't me, as the new one was perfect. I will get another D500. I will just have to wait until they are more readily available.

BTW, I do have NX-D, and can work with the raw files. I have also been a PS user since PS 3, Lightroom 1 to CC.

I firmly believe that 10% of SRP ($200 in D500 case) restock fee should be charged for every return of  an item in perfect working order.  That would stop this madness of returning goods "... just because  I can" in USA.

Steve, a couple of questions and a suggestion

Are you using a card reader to transfer your images from the SD card to your computer?  If you are, it would be interesting to tether to the camera directly to see if reading from the card yields the same results.  If you are tethering to download, then try the opposite.

Next question, you are using the newer UHS-II cards?  If so, are you using a UHS-II compatible card reader?  Could be that some older readers might have issues.

Of course this does help you "mush" issues, but it may at least help figure out if your camera is having issues writing to the SD card or if this is an issue with your method of reading the card.  More often than not I have seen this with card reading issues.

Good luck.

I would say that in this case memory card problem is not a D500 camera problem.

FT problem is not obvious to me, kit lens at wide open f2.8 aperture does not provide enough resolution to produce sharpness as you expect.

Too many variables to be able to say that's all a camera fault. Try to isolate a problem and eliminate variables.

Try another memory card.

Try another lens, a proven one that delivers.

Then draw conclusion.

FWIW, I have tried 17~55 f2.8, 24~70 f2.8, 70~200 f2.8 VR1, 300 f4, 500 f4 VRll, 105 f2.8.
All of them showed issues. I do not have any 'kit' lenses. The 70~200 were probably the best of the bunch, but even those shots needed more PP than I wanted to spend time doing. I usually shoot Raw+jpg fine, and process the raw files for important events, but I do like to just grab some nice jpgs, SOOC when doing pleasure shooting. As far as memory card problems, look around the forums, how many other makes, and models have this issue? I have had issue with 2 cards from different manufactures. This was just the last of what I wanted to deal with. And with a 30 day return policy, why should I risk keeping it past that, and have it spend time in the service center. I want to make pictures, I don't want to have to keep fiddle/#!@%$* around with it to get what I paid for. As soon as I can find another, I will buy one, and find this thread and post nice images. I am sure that will happen

Don't think of me as ungrateful for people offering up suggestions, I really do appreciate the comments and suggestions. But also accept the fact that sometimes, a problem gets thru. I had a focus problem with a D800e. The service center took care of it. I had a problem with a D300, the service center replaced it. Oil spots, fogging etc. etc. Stuff happens, and I try to deal with it.

Thank you.

Re: Can you live with RAW + JPG on XQD ?

Well, in that case (multiple m. cards and lenses tested) it seems you have no other way out but to return it, I wish you the best of luck with another D500 sample. Mine should arrive this week, I hope it will deliver just like my D810 with no glitches at all.

What kind of focus problem you had with your D800E?
