Upgrade 1100D or invest in lens

Hi,

I ve been an avid reader of the forum for many years, now I have a dilemma, i have a 4yrs old 1100D which served me well, now i was thinking about upgrading it, the SL1 and 700D is within my budget, Im just a hobbyist.

I was comparing the three cameras and their IQ , I found that though the SL1 and 700D are way better spec wise but the IQ is not that different, infact the high iso performance was better in 1100D imo. Im attaching some pics from the "compared to raw" section from the review of this very site. I always shoot RAW and never shoot videos.

The T6i and T6s are fabulous cameras but out of my budget. I have a 50 f1.8 ii, 55-250is ii ,75-300iii, Tamron 18-200 non vc ,

so i was thinking to keep my 1100D for now and get a 10-18 is stm, the thing i miss most in the 1100D is the auto sensor cleaner but love the huge battery life.

Thoughts..

If it were me, I would save $50 (USD) a month until the Canon T6i/T6s (750D/760D) cameras were within budget.  A person can always buy another battery, so the battery life shouldn't be an issue.  Keep your Canon 1100D as a backup.  Then save up for a wide angle lens for next year.  But it really depends on what you want.  The difference between the latest 24mp Rebels and your 12.2mp Canon 1100D is huge.

A good and well fundamented advice.

When I was in simular shoes a while back I did think this way:

- when I buy a new body that will be great, but in a few years technology will have changed again, do my next buy, perhaps in two or three years, will be another body, so my investment in a body now will loose it's value totally (this is perhaps a bit exaggerated, but you get the idea)

- when i, on the other hand, buy a new lens, I can enjoy the investment still as I buy that better newer new body in a year or three.

At that time I decided for a lens and kept my (then kinda absolete) body. I did indeed buy another body last spring and am still enjoying my lenses.

(I don't think your 1100D is obsolete yet, though these new senors are indeed a leap forward)

Welcome!  Glad to have you posting.

Actually there is a very noticeable difference, esp once you get out shooting and comparing.  The increase in resolution alone is very nice, esp if you print or crop much.

infact the high iso performance was better in 1100D imo. Im attaching some pics from the "compared to raw" section from the review of this very site.

Keep in mind that you are looking at 100% crops, and the newer cameras give you 50% more resolution (thus they appear noisier unless you adjust for that increased resolution).

I always shoot RAW and never shoot video

RAW is good.  You are stacking the odds iin your favor already.

The T6i and T6s are fabulous cameras but out of my budget. I have a 50 f1.8 ii, 55-250is ii ,75-300iii, Tamron 18-200 non vc ,

It really depends on what you shoot and how you like to shoot it.  Can you expand on this a little?

Ready to help,

R2

Re: Upgrade 1100D or invest in lens

Thanks all for ur valuable advice, I really appreciate it.

I like to shoot all kinds of photos, as a hobbyist of course :).. whenever i like to shoot portraits, the 50mm covers it, telephoto 55-250, I even bought a 18-200 Tamron and regret it, the landscape is covered by the kit 18 55 IS lens. I was looking at some shots and thought that it could have been better if it was a bit wider so the thought of getting a 10-18 came into my mind,

The 700D is going cheap here should i upgrade to it? Or settle for a 1200D or 1300D? all of them has 18mp sensor, same?

I dont have any fascination towards articulating screen, touch, wifi etc. as long as its functional and gives good iq i am okay with it.

P.S. - @R2D2 ive seen some of your bird shots in another thread, they are awesome

Thanks

I have the EOS M3 which got the same sensor as 750/760D and I can safely say that it is well worth the upgrade over the old 18MP sensor because it is not only better at high iso but it is also much cleaner at low ISO which gives you much more flexibility in handling difficult lightning conditions

Re: Upgrade 1100D or invest in lens

sorry for the late reply. Thanks a lot for your advice.

I ve been to the camera store lately and they have a tendency to push me towards the 1300d which is just a 1200d + WiFi, though they are a lot nice to hold than my 1100 ive decided to skip the xxxxD rebel series and atleast get a xxxD rebel.

there was also a great deal on the used 650D. Which got me confused again, I was looking for an used 60D but there was none.

Are the sensors of 550D,600D,650D,700D,SL1 same? If so, are the IQ and iso performance same too? I know the processors are different.

and lastly, i get to take a look at the 10-18STM but looking at the viewfinder im not sure i need that wide a lens though and the distortions , funny how  huge difference 8mm makes at wide angle.

So guys skip these 18mp sensors and wait until canon comes with something new? Or skip to a 750D/760D (after a few months saving)?

I suggest selling the Tamron 18-200. Especially if you do not need it and regret the purchase. Use the funds to help get a better lens and/or camera.

I suggest checking out the Rebel Forum FAQ for some insight:

All of Canon's 18MP Cameras will have similar image quality. The higher/newer you go, you are basically paying more for features. They are a step up from your current camera. The 750D/760D is another step up form there.

If you are patient and in the US, consider waiting for a good sale on a referb. body/camera at the Canon store.  Watch for prices at canonpricewatch.com.  There can be awesome deals around the holidays.
