Canon 500d replacement

Hello, I want some advice with what camera should I choose. My options  are Nikon D5100+18-55mm or Pentax K-r+18-55mm+50mm f1.7. It is worth giving my 500D for one of these?

Maybe if there is something about the Canon you can't work with. Any particular reason you want to change systems?

No important reason, I just want to change it with a better one, and I saw on many forums that those options are better than my Canon. If this is not true, I could keep it and  invest in it.

You are reading the wrong forums.

Canon right now probably has the best entry level camera system as their STM lenses are simply unbeatable for image quality and value.

If you are not getting good photos with your Canon 500D, a new camera will not make a huge difference.  And it doesn't mater what brand it is.

It's really less to do with the camera (especially at the entry level) and more about the system. Everyone has an opinion as to what is "best". Its kind of silly, really. No one can look at a nice picture and tell you which camera it was taken on.

As far as systems go, Canon and Nikon have the largest selection of first and third party lenses, so they they tend to be a good place to invest. I like the layout of a Canon camera and have access to some nice quality glass, so that's why I went with their system.

Re: Canon 500d replacement

I don't know about those brands (that is enough to tell you which one to choose). But I do know that I would look at both the cameras and lenses offered, for what gives you the best value. That's why I chose Canon over four years ago, after using Olympus DSLR cameras and lenses for about four years. Canon has made some good improvements with their cameras recently and the STM lenses are great.

Looking at the specific cameras you mentioned above, they are fairly similar to yours. If you're looking to get a new piece of kit to make things a little more interesting, and you like the Canon system, you'll get more bang for your buck by investing in a new lense.

IMHO I would not consider giving your 500D for one of those cameras. It's not just that I currently own and still use my 500D which is a great camera I might add but rather it is my firm belief that if something works within the scope of your ability then there's no reason to change. Yes its true that Nikon does offer better dynamic range with their sensors but the difference as far as I'm concerned isn't reason enough to change brands. Canon cameras have for the most part provided better ergonomics in their cameras which is greatly important when you need to get that perfect shot. It's sort of like typing.

There are some people who prefer typing on an ergonomic keyboard which uses a specific design to separate the right keys from the left and one which I must admit I found quite useful back then. However I never truly learned how to type fluently using one of these keyboards. Rather it was while using a traditional keyboard. My point to all this is; the camera is simply a tool to helping you show the viewer how you perceive the world at a glance. If you find that you're limited in your abilities in any brand then by all means change.

But...I strongly recommend that you seriously consider whether changing to Nikon will improve your skills as photographer.

Short answer NO...... its more of a sideways step both the pentax and the D5100 are old cameras..a bit newer than the 500d but not a lot....i did not like the sensor in the 500D.. ANY of the 18MP canon cameras will be an upgrade ...but the biggest upgrade will be the newer STM kit lenses over your old kit lens ....The best bang for the buck with modern features and VERY good cheap lenses is the Canon 100D with any STM lenses..has touch screen very small ..better AF than the equivalent new/ish nikon and pentax better video AF..mike input

to spread the cost you could upgrade your lense first and body later(or the other way round)..say to a 18-55 STM..or 18-135 stm if in budget ...the 24mm F2.8 stm and 40mm F2.8 STM primes are cheap and very sharp and fitted to a 100D will fit in a jacket pocket and the 50mm F1.8 STM is very good and faster at F1.8......the 24mm F2.8.stm tests out as sharp as the zeiss 24mm F1.8 for the sony E mount (DXO) but costs £800 GBP.. i pay £99 GPB new delivered for my 24mm stm (typ £125 or less) that what i like about Canon is there are some VERY sharp lenses for little money new now

If you tell us what type of Photography you are into its easier to advise ...also you will probably get different answers from the nikon and pentax forums .

Hope this helps

+1 And be sure to test out each camera first.  They all operate very differently.
