Does anyone own the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 II?

I'm considering buying this lens for travel. I bought the first version about 3.5 years ago from an Asian seller on eBay. It was a bum lens, softer than the Oly 14-42 IIR at the same apertures. Since the reviews seem to be all over the place on this lens, I'm assuming I just received a bad copy. I'd rather just pay more for a new one that I can return if it's substandard.

For owners of the mk. II version, how does your copy perform? I'm curious if Panasonic made any QC changes, but there are hardly any in-depth reviews on the II. Thanks.

I have one. I’ve not had it long nor have I used it extensively, and I’m not a real pixel peeper. I’ve been very satisfied with the output. Center is sharp wide open and corners sharpen up when stopped down a little. Honestly, I know it’s a flaw but I’m really not generally troubled by little vignetting or corners that aren’t critically sharp. I have the PL25 and Oly 75 and it’s certainly not in that category in terms of critical sharpness but at least my copy is on par with my Oly 17 f/1.8. Hopefully, others can chime in.

I understand the changes were purely cosmetic.

I have a Panasonic 14mm version 1 and it's excellent, definitely better than the kit lens.

Another option for you might be to pick up another copy of the 14mm version 1.  They are quite cheap, particularly if you find a used copy, ideally locally that you can try.

Like toronto1818, I too have the version 1.  It's sharper than my kit O14-42II and f2.5 comes in very useful for indoor/lowlight shots.  However, my O25mmf1.8 is consistently sharper but IMO that is not a fair comparison.

I got mine used($160) and TBH, I won't pay full price eventhough I use it more than my other prime's, especially with a 0.76x converter.  I'd buy it again(used) because of its pancake size - I recently added a 15mmf1.8 which is starting to see more use over the 14mm except when I need the wide converter to get me 10.6mm FL in a compact form.

Thanks for the responses. I decided to take the plunge with the II - I'd rather pay extra and have the peace of mind of being able to return a soft lens. Should arrive Wednesday before I go on a trip.

I had the II, didn't like it, sold it. Now I'm very happy with the Panasonic 15mm f/1.7.

I bought the Ricoh GR instead, its on another level to the panny 14mm and mine was cheaper than the 15mm 1.7.

some say they prefer to use the panny 12-32 instead of the 14mm, i have that and would agree but still prefer the ricoh gr.

If it has to be a m43 then the 15mm 1.7 seems to get positive feedback all round and is still a lens i would get for my gm1 if money was no option.

Yeah, I may buy the GR when the price comes back down. I've owned several copies of the 15/1.7 as well but I prefer shooting with the 20/1.7 for the focal length. I guess the 14/2.5 appeals to me because of its tiny size where I can carry both lenses (the 15, while relatively small, is not something I'd like to carry in a pocket).

Taken a million pictures with my 14mm mk1, superb lens, more than sharp enough for you unless you're a pro' needing 6ft wide prints or unless you get pixel peeping at crazy magnifications.

It's a good 'wide but not too wide' lens which some like me use a standard lens and is about as small as you can get.
