Roller Derby with the 40-150 f2.8
8

Haven't shot much stuff lately. Life has changed a bit in the last few months, as I've been starting my PhD. I think I'll be doing more photography in a bit, now that I'm getting my schedule sorted.

Anyway, here's a few from a recent bout. Must say, I love the 40-150 for this work. That long reach is very useful as I can perch myself in the stands and shoot down at the skaters.

Great lens I am always impressed with its results and workable indoors

Cool shots as well kind of a different perspective and unusual sport looks like they are mixing up .

Do not even know the objective of the game ?

Yup, haven't seen that action for a while.

Back to your roots, Martin!

Good stuff.

To put it simply, "It's complicated".

You'll need to look up the rules I think.

I always thought that Roller Derby was a poor substitute for watching wrestling. IMHO, they are both soap operas wth good guys and bad guys.

By the way, great shots!

You might want to update your knowledge. Modern roller derby has almost nothing to do with the old scripted, sports entertainment derby. Modern derby is a highly competitive sport.

Those are well done, Martin, but the venue detracts. The fans are so close that they take away from the skaters. I rarely say this, but I'd like to see more subject isolation.

Exposure info

Martin,

Can you share what the general range of exposure info you were shooting with was? These look great, I'm impressed with how clean these shots look, but seems like you would have had to be up there around ISO 1600 at least.

Reason I ask is that I'm considering moving to m4/3 exclusively, but shoot some stage/dance/theatre stuff and I'm on the edge whether I can get what I need out of my E-M1 (for everything else there is no question!).

Thanks!

Bill C

These are actually more like ISO 2500 or so. They were bumped up half a stop or so in post.

I was shooting 1/320 f2.8 ISO 1600.

Re: Exposure info

Thanks for the reply Martin. Again, a clean looking set and I'd be hard pressed to grab that kind of focus with my D610!

IIRC there is one person who scores points for their team by completing laps. Everyone else tries to stop the other team's, uh, scorer and help their own. Not really that complicated.
