My second dp1 brick... :-(
4

Today, my dp1s stuck. Can't turn it on,  the lens is still protruded. It is my second dp1 in this kind of final condition. I am very sad, as this was, together with my dp2x, my carry-everywhere-combo.

Two shots from the last serie, last thursday, it was 'Liberation Day'  in the Netherlands, with perfect wether conditions (opposed to the weather last week on Kingsdag, about 20 degrees Celcius difference).

My condolences

Fortunately, my DP2s was out of the room when I read your post, so I hope that the malade is not contagious.

So what have you done with these two DP1 bricks, have there been any repair attempts and so on?

If you feel ratling noise when you shake camera it is internal cable responsible for shutter and focus. I am not sure if they are still available at eBay but changing it kind of complicated

Daniel,

Sorry to hear that. Get a DP1M or DP1Q or DP0Q and you will not have that problem since the lenses are fixed.

Re: My second dp1 brick... :-(

I attempted the first one, but without success. I doubt what I will do with this one. Maybe I might buy another (second hand) one for about 75 euro..

Even if listen carefully when I shake, I can't hear any moving parts. My previous one, I disassembled without success and without seeing any non-fixed objects. Now, I am in doubt about getting another similar camera.

Thanks for you empathy. I am considering getting the dp1m, but two things prevent me from getting it soon:

1. File size is soo large... I like the handling of the (relatively) small files of the pre merril age.

2. Battery life. With the dp2x and dp1s in the bag, I always carried four batteries, good for about one weekend out. I am afraid I have to double that in case of the dp1m..

Daniel,

Battery life is better with the DP Qs and image quality is great with both the DP Ms and Qs both of which can be used at low res. if you want to keep the files similar to your dead DP 1. The Jpegs from the DP Q are also very good can also do RAW conversion in the camera. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I can heartily recommend the dp0q.  Raw file size of a lo-res shot is 25 meg or less, compared with about 15 meg for classic DP2 raws, and compared with 50+ meg for Quattro hi-res.  SPP processes the lo-res files much faster than the hi-res, and many say the color and image quality is better in lo-res.

It is a positively huge camera relative to the classic DP1 of course, but surprisingly lightweight.

Sorry to hear about your camera problem. Have you explored the option to get it fixed by Sigma service? I am quite sure they can assist you with your camera.

Cheers,

Sattva

X70?

sorry to hear about your Dp1. I've had the same problem with my DP2s, and I did send it to Sigma Japan to get it fixed (but that was in 2011). not sure they still do this, but even if they do it might not be the most economical solution.

Also, for 28mm equivalent FOV you now have excellent alternatives available. If you really like the 28mm field of view perhaps may want to consider getting a Fuji X70?

If Fuji would make a X70-type camera with 40-45mm lens I would swap my DP2 for it quickly (I own a X100, but that is a bit too heavy for me so I usually take the more light-weight Dp2s with me instead).

Re: X70?

Trying to substitute for a Foveon is something of a can of worms:

Even drastic downsizing can't quite duplicate Foveon snap.

Re: X70?

Actually, I think a good idea is to use the camera to produce the smaller files.

For example, on my X100 the files look much better if I set the file size to M producing crispy clear 3072 x 2048 images straight from camera, rather than downsizeing myself from the full format 4288 x 2848.

The medium-sized X100 image files are really very similar in quality to the Dp2s ones, so I guess the X70 would be no slouch either (assuming you like 28mm)

Re: My second dp1 brick... :-(

I will have a look... It might be a circuit related problem because on a full battery, when I try turn it on, It get's some current for a fraction of a second, before if stops working. (I can hear the motor of the lens). Then I need to recharge the battery again.

Stepping into another brand has run through my mind, especially the Ricoh GR. I was not aware of this option. Looks great, a step forward on many fronts, but before making the jump I have to jump over some emotional barriers

From your description it appears to be an electrical short that is taking place...

I got a reply from Sigma Benelux stating that they can't repair the camera, because of the spare parts that are no longer supplied for this camera.

:-(, but no surprise for me.
