24-70 II focus problem

I recently bought a canon 24-70 2.8 II and am not happy with how sharp it is, especially at 24mm with subjects closer than ~12 ft. I’ve tried it on a tripod (mirror lockup with 2 second timer), with and without filter, bright light and low and it doesn’t seem to matter. At 70 it appears sharp, but still not as sharp as my 70-200 2.8 II or 100mm L macro. I would think I just got a bad lens and exchange it (which I plan to try anyway) except that when I had a Tamron 24-70 2.8 it focused poorly in low light, especially at 24mm (which I heard is not uncommon with that lens). I tried micro adjusting both lenses, but it did not show much improvement. Could this be a camera problem as opposed to a lens issue? It looks like it’s missing focus. I’m using a 5D3 and have tried different autofocusing drives and points. As I stated before under the same conditions other (longer) lenses are tack sharp, and my 50mm 1.8 seems to hit focus the vast majority of the time. I forgot to try a zoomed in live view manual focus for sharpness, but will do that and report back.

Thanks

It would help if you could post a few pictures taken at different focal lengths for us to better diagnose the problem and possibly find a solution.

My copy is sharp, close-up, with 5D3.  Are you shooting RAW and sharpening in post?

Re: 24-70 II focus problem

I brought it back to where I got it and the owner thought it might be a bad contact. I exchanged it and the new one is very sharp. Thanks for the replies.
