Checking for damage to NX 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 PZ

Hi all,

I while back I purchased a second hand 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 PZ lens for my NX300 and have been using it daily. The other day however I dropped it on a wooden floor and my heart stopped! Gutted I may have damaged it but it appears to still be working OK. I had the lens covers on both ends though.

The only thing I have noticed and I should have checked this before when purchased with it being second hand lens, when I shake it I here a very subtle rattle and I wouldn't say it was a loud oh no something is really loose in there moving about.

I wondered if its normal for this lens due to its construction and features. Not having the same lens to test, does anyone have the lens and could confirm for me to put my mind at rest? It almost sounds like its the plus and minus zoom buttons that rattle slightly but not sure.

Thanks,

You can test the lens in all shoot modes at any settings to see if there any damage to the optical or mechanical parts that can affect th image

The buttons itself can do some rattle yes, you can slightly push them and shake a little to see if the noise is still appears. But if it's not - also there is some other parts inside that can move and make sounds. As for the optical elements - if none of outside glasses isn't damaged - shifted or scratched, and they both set straight and sturdy - so optical system is fine, nothing to worry here

Yes, that's why I said that if it works with any required settings - it's probably good to go, because if it's broken - it's never get you right picture because of fragile, in most cases it does not work at all after crash

First of all the 12-24 is a completely different lens, then I have abused a couple of pz lenses for some years now and everything is fine, finally, the aforementioned 12-24 that I own (obviously the construction is cheap and not that sturdy, the worst constructed NX lens in my opinion) works fine, and I can't say that I am overprotective (or protective, for that matter), also there are people here using NX500 with the 12-24 on very rough terrains amd situations. I wish the problem with this lens is something of the past.

I would love a slightly beefed up 12-24. But at the same time I wouldn't due to the weight. I could easily see me carrying it around hiking and backpacking with it but I do worry about the construction of the lens.

For now I mainly use the 10 for that purpose. Too bad I can not add a filter to protect it better. Biggest limit for me is not being able to add a nd filter to the 10. Yet again I'm getting way off track.

To the op. Take some pictures fully opened and check for any decentering. Lots of post and websites that will teach you how to do this. Hopefully all is good and if not stopping down a bit might make it not  as noticeable. The best of luck to you.

Well, I was answering about 16-50 PZ, and didn't realise that subject changes, because FB page shows me only pictures of some lens and I just made the assumption it's still about 16-50. As for 12-24 - never used one, can't say nothing useful

But I did broke one of PZs, so, seen them insides ))
Glass and plastic is very fine and sturdy for this dimensions, I'd say it's very hard lense. I broke mine only by pretty bad accident when I shoot some video and there was a scene with some sort of martial arts performance, very small one you know, like two punches in the air and one Jackie Chan / Van Damme leg kick, and nobody tell me before that there is some "air fight" in the script. So, naturally, guy just did his part and hit my camera with last leg kick. NX1 doesn't even stop the record, but Lens fall off in almost two pieces. Not SO hard kick obviously, but enough to break the lens. And so you know - I manage to put pieces together nothing actually totalled, only one long FFC was cut in half, that's somewhat maintainable

Thanks everyone for your help, I will do some tests and hopefully it will come out fine.  Seems OK recently whilst I have been using it so I guess I got lucky.
