Kiwi journalist Amos Chapple shoots with a GH4, a bunch of m43 lenses, and a drone.

Parts of that remind me of my time in Finland many years ago: http://australianimage.com.au/wordpress/index.php/when-i-was-nineteen/ . Blow torches to warm up trucks and moving about on uncertain ice and swamps a common thing.

Good soldiers, the Finns - gave the Russkies a spanking in the 1940s.

You might enjoy this Finnish photo essay by the same photographer:

That is just awesome.

The stuff that (photographers') dreams are made of.

The stuff that makes my heart race faster and gives me a rush of blood to the head.

The stuff that I would give an arm for to make myself (well, maybe not an arm but a joint my left pinky).

The stills are the backbone here, but the narrative enhances them, and so do the few video snippets (including the drone shots).

This is some of the best documentary work I have seen recently.

It would reach millions if presented on Maptia.

Incredible work--and story about a way of life.  It is National Geographic quality.

A nice documentary. It would be interesting to compare ice highways in Russia with those in Northern Ontario. Global warming may also be changing things and making travelling on them more dangerous.

Thanks for this.

Wonderful, amazing, harrowing. Not sure I'd think about cameras if I were along for that ride.

That is amazing and well worth watching, and would be so no matter what system shot it.  To know it was shot with a GH4 is icing on the beautiful cake.  The aurora borealis shot is beautiful, taken from outside the truck with the truck in the picture, at 3AM, in temperatures that he says can freeze the drive shaft and need a blow torch to thaw it in the morning!  Wow!

Wow! Amazing! I read a thriller about this once…

…can't remember the name of it -- the word K .............. (?) Heights was there -- which described this mad stuff very accurately. Amazing. Then in summer the trucks can't run because everything turns to mud on top of the still frozen base.

The younger driver who had to get out of the water was very fortunate to survive, I suspect.
