X-A1 + Kit Lens - Possible for Lens Cap to Cause Scratches in Centre of Lens?
Apr 21, 2016
I've had the X-A1 with the kit lens for almost two years. For as long as I can remember (though I haven't been paying too much attention), there has been a 'mark' right on the centre of the front lens glass. I'd been wiping the lens periodically but never looked too closely at the mark. It was only when I got another scratch on the lens that I realised the mark in the middle is actually a scratch. You can feel it in one direction with a (gentle) fingernail test. This mark sometimes causes a small area of low contrast/blurriness in the centre, but it is only visible at higher apertures (7+), and even then, not all the time. When it isn't visible, could it still be causing any sharpness/contrast issues throughout the wider photo?
I'm currently deciding whether to live with the issue or to take the opportunity to upgrade. I assume fixing such a cheap lens would be uneconomical.
However, I'm mainly wondering whether the (supplied, snap-in Fujifilm-brand) lens cap could have caused it. I would assume that Fujifilm wouldn't design a lens cap that touched the lens, but it really does seem like it could be too close, especially with there being protruding numbers printed right in the centre of the inside of the lens. I've definitely absentmindedly twisted the lens cap while it was on the camera quite a few times before.
I did a test by applying a small amount of lens cleaning solution to the centre of the lens cap and then putting the cap on (with the camera on top so it wasn't just gravity). Some did seem to transfer onto the lens. Is it possible that twisting the cap, or just contact with the cap, has caused the scratch? I thought plastic couldn't hurt glass, but the scratch really is RIGHT in the centre. Do you know anything else that could cause a round scratch like this? I am happy with the Fujifilm cameras and plan to stay with their X compact system range, but I am concerned about this happening again.
Thanks!
PS. Yes, I know that a filter can prevent this kind of thing happening... I am fairly sure I plan on putting one on to any future camera I get (still reading about the pros and cons).
