X-A1 + Kit Lens - Possible for Lens Cap to Cause Scratches in Centre of Lens?

I've had the X-A1 with the kit lens for almost two years. For as long as I can remember (though I haven't been paying too much attention), there has been a 'mark' right on the centre of the front lens glass. I'd been wiping the lens periodically but never looked too closely at the mark. It was only when I got another scratch on the lens that I realised the mark in the middle is actually a scratch. You can feel it in one direction with a (gentle) fingernail test. This mark sometimes causes a small area of low contrast/blurriness in the centre, but it is only visible at higher apertures (7+), and even then, not all the time. When it isn't visible, could it still be causing any sharpness/contrast issues throughout the wider photo?

I'm currently deciding whether to live with the issue or to take the opportunity to upgrade. I assume fixing such a cheap lens would be uneconomical.

However, I'm mainly wondering whether the (supplied, snap-in Fujifilm-brand) lens cap could have caused it. I would assume that Fujifilm wouldn't design a lens cap that touched the lens, but it really does seem like it could be too close, especially with there being protruding numbers printed right in the centre of the inside of the lens. I've definitely absentmindedly twisted the lens cap while it was on the camera quite a few times before.

I did a test by applying a small amount of lens cleaning solution to the centre of the lens cap and then putting the cap on (with the camera on top so it wasn't just gravity). Some did seem to transfer onto the lens. Is it possible that twisting the cap, or just contact with the cap, has caused the scratch? I thought plastic couldn't hurt glass, but the scratch really is RIGHT in the centre. Do you know anything else that could cause a round scratch like this? I am happy with the Fujifilm cameras and plan to stay with their X compact system range, but I am concerned about this happening again.

Thanks!

PS. Yes, I know that a filter can prevent this kind of thing happening... I am fairly sure I plan on putting one on to any future camera I get (still reading about the pros and cons).

It's certainly quite possible to accidentally damage a lens using the lens cap but normally it would be caused by bringing it into contact at an angle rather than putting it on flat. I always put a UV filter on my lenses when I buy them (even second-hand ones) and I have occasionally damaged the coating on the filters  by being very clumsy with the lens cap.

Some lenses are better protected than others because the front element is recessed well below the plastic/metal ring on the front; I do have a copy of the 16-50mm but can't remember what it's like in that regard.

However, the mark on your lens looks pretty bad and I can't see how the lens cap could cause it unless something got caught underneath, e.g. a small stone.

I noticed an oily mark in the middle of my lens and realised it was the cap making contact. I could not believe such poor design and wrote to Fuji about it. They replied to say they were not aware of the issue, that's all they said.

I resolved it by buying a simpler lens cap that had the "pinches" at the edges, rather than in the middle.

But yes, very poor design.

A flaw on the surface of your lens will not be seen in a localized place. What you are seeing is something else. It will cause a slightly reduced contrast. That can be minimized by usng black ink applied to just the rough places. That will reduce the light scatter of the jagged edges.

I would not worry about it and use it until you are ready to replace the camera. I am sure that a kid you know would love to have it when you are done with it.

I wonder what else could be causing the dull spot? Dust directly in the middle? I've done some more tests and the greyish zone definitely gets smaller and more intense the higher the aperture. It isn't noticeable below  f7.1. I'll have a look into the black ink method, though I am concerned that I would somehow do it wrong and end up with a black spot in the middle of the photos...

So I'm not the only one! Whether the lens cap caused my scratch or not, I'm definitely uncomfortable with the fact the cap makes contact with the lens. Surely that means that any bumps to the lens cap are also bumps to the lens. I'll look into buying a new one.

I just checked my copy of the 16-50 version II and it doesn’t have this issue, though the amount of clearance with the lens cap is small. Maybe this is one of the things Fuji improved in the “II” version of this lens?
