Question About Lenses for NX1

I am currently using the NX1 as my main camera with the 16-50 S Lens as my main lens. I am looking to get a zoom lens to go along with it.

Obviously, I would like to get the 50-150 S lens but the price is a little more than I am looking to pay right now. I was also looking at the 50-200 F:4-5.6 iFunction lens as an alternative.

Mostly what I would be shooting with the lens would be outdoor shots of landscape and such, the vast majority of which would be in the daytime during very bright conditions.

How much of a difference in quality would the higher lens make in those circumstances? I understand that with the lower f stop it would obviously be better in low light conditions, but I would be mainly using my existing lens for those situations.

I have the cheaper 50-200 zoom and use it on my NX500. It's very good right through its zoom range, and if you can close it  by one or two stops, I should think you'll be very satisfied with it.

Yeah I think I am leaning that way as well. For my circumstances, I don't think I would be making use of what the S Lens provides enough to warrant the price difference. I can pick up the 50-200 and a couple other lenses in the future for the same price. Was just looking for some ideas from other people as well

I have a 50-200mm coming from B&H on Wednesday. I plan on using it for my grandsons soccer games. Will test it out for sharpness and tracking to see if its a keeper or not.

Hi I have both the NX 50-200mm and the NX 50-150mm S and both are great lenses.

I have used the NX 50-200 to capture kids playing and it have performed well.

When I go on hikes most of the time I will grab the NX 50-200mm since it is so light and quality I get from it is good.

I did a quick compare for you both where shot with tripod OIS/off at 150mm 1/60 at f / 5.6.

The NX 50-200 seems to have a bit more zoom at 150mm then the  NX 50-150mm S lens.

I myself feel the NX 50-200mm lens is a great lens and at great price.

When I got my NX 50-150mm S lens I thought well now I wont use the 50-200mm but I still use it often and the light weight of it is a huge advantage.

I hope this was helpful.

So when do you use the 50-150?

I use the 50-150mm S on paid shoots and when i want the best image i can have or when i dont mind packing the gear. I use the 50-200mm on the NX500 alot since the 50-150mm S is heavy to dangle from your neck.

No difference. The 50-200 is good.

Re: Question About Lenses for NX1

I have both the NX 50-200 and the 50-150 S.

I initially bought the 50-200 for my NX 500 to test the waters with this cam. It's not bad at all for a cheap zoom, but obviously doesn't have critical sharpness, resolution and micro contrast (pop). There really is a very significant difference between the two lenses in these aspects, also in terms of AF speed and bokeh. The 50-150S is a truly superb lens, but it's of course heavy and costs a bunch. I don't use my 50-200 anymore since I have the 50-150 S.

Now, the 50-200 is actially not that bad, especially given its low price, but if you want superfast and accurate AF and excellent image quality, also in difficult lighting like backlit scenes (shooting against the sun/light source) you can forget the 50-200 as it flares a lot in these situations, and the images come out whitish and flat, massively losing contrast and colours. This is a major issue in landscape shooting, btw, and also for portrait. The image quality of the 50-200 also drops quite a bit towards its long end. Its AF is pretty good, I used it initially for kids action photos, but it's no match for the blazingly fast and accurate AF of the 50-150 S.

The 50-150 S, big as it is, balances very well on the N1, for which it was made. Just like the 16-50 S you and I have. These lenses complement each other perfectly on the NX1.

I never have my cams dangle around my neck, btw, always on the shoulder. Weight is less of an issue then, and you can switch shoulders.

Re: Question About Lenses for NX1

Looks like many of the Samsung lenses are on sale right now (including $300 off each of the S Lenses) at B&H.

Unfortunately, the NX1 camera body seems to be discontinued everywhere. (Sad news for people like me that don't want to buy used camera bodies).

I'll pick my copy of the 50-200 lens tomorrow from UPS, and head down to the river to see if theres

anything moving down there to test the lens with. I'm hoping that combo will replace my A6000 and 55-210 setup. We'll see.

I would echo this opinion, but also just note that, for what the 50-200 mm is, it does beat out the competition from other brands in that price range.  It's really quite a decent lens, but yes, mine also doesn't see use any longer now that I have the 50-150.  I would also just warn people away from the 18-200 in case they get any funny ideas, it's sharpness (or rather lack thereof) is not passable for stills, which is really unfortunate because the lens is pretty nice in some other ways.

Well, I received the 50-200 4-5.6 lens yesterday and tested it out. It seemed fine for subjects that were not moving. But when tracking an object it failed badly. So its going back today. Tracking a moving object was the main reason I wanted this lens. Oh well, I guess I'll stick with my A6000 for now, it tracks very well and has 10 fps.
