Thinking about buying an nx mini...

Ok so I am usually posting over in the m43 forum as I am engrained in that system. I haven't previously given any thought to the Samsung cameras beyond some review reading but today I saw a nx mini used at a camera store while walking around. They want 150 usd for the nx mini and the 9mm kit lens.

The thing is ridiculously thin and I love that it is still an interchangeable lens camera. I had been considering getting a Panasonic gm5.

I mostly shoot street and I prefer primes. On my m43 kit I only use manual focus lenses. I don't own anything with auto focus. I am thrown off by the lack of a viewfinder but can deal with that.

As far as I understand there are only 3 lenses available for the system? That said I am interested in the nx mini with the 9mm and 17mm lenses. I would also experiment with adapting some cmount lenses to it. My plan for the gm5 was to use a kit of 3 cmount lenses for a tiny manual focus version of my regular kit. But if the nx mini could do this as well then I might consider it instead.

So I guess what I need to know is how does the nx mini perform? Can you adapt lenses to it easily? And does it have focus peaking? And would you take it over a gm5 all other things being equal?

Auto focus is a work of the devil.

I have the mini. It is a solid camera within its limitations. You can research IQ and find that it is capable of producing very high quality images.  Here are my random thoughts.

  • The 9mm makes it a very compact package, but it is a slow lens so not so great indoors
  • The 9-27mm is stabilized and works better indoors but it pretty big. It also requires the add on flash because the built in interferes with the length of the lens. I never use flash with this lens.
  • The 17mm is the star! It is fast and stabilized. However it adds thickness.
  • I think this camera would be good for street and outdoor photography. A good travel camera. It is poor indoors in low to moderate lighting compared to cameras like the RX100
  • The lack of even a single dial makes adjustments slower. It is pretty intuitive however and I think Samsung did the best anyone could do with the interface.
  • touch screen, as always, adds lots of function.
  • it is hard to grip. I like the Samsung brand leather case that screws onto the tripod mount. Adds little thickness and feels great. Plus you can get it cheap now. Downside is that it has to be removed to change cards and charge battery,
  • There is no focus peaking, but there is magnification assist.
  • The Samsung brand adaptor works great to mount full size lens but is not cheap.

hope my random thoughts help.

I don't have one, yet.

Samsung fixed it so it's hard to make a cheap adapter. To my understanding you need to ground out a couple pins for it to work.

Their are no cheap china made adapters for this cam.

Ebay seller ramir73 makes c mount and d mount adapters. He has been sold out for awhile on the c mount adapters. I haven't checked to see if he is going to make anymore.

I just sent him a message to see if he is going to make any more Samsung NX Mini C mount adapters. I will post back as soon as I hear from him.

mine biggest problem with nx mini is rolling shutter effects...since nx mini does have only electronic shutter it is very easy to have rolling shutter effect, and it might be a big problem with street photography where you can't stand still everytime and you have to move back and forth...for static subjects it's a fine camera, but another problem is camera itself tend too often to focus on the background instead on the foreground...it doesnt make me happy sometimes on the street because it missed focus on human faces...
