Finally ordered an upgrade (Canon SL1)
2

Thanks to all who helped in my decision. I decided to go for an SL1, Canon dropped the price back down on their refurb site. So got an SL1, with lens, and 1 year warranty, and all the normal accessories that come with it A used T4i sounded good too, but the SL1 will be miles ahead of my current 450D and give me more than I hoped for even at that price. (finally have HD video in a DSLR, that'll be at least fun to play with)

But having the ability to set ISO to auto 1600 and auto 3200 will be great and my main reason for upgrading. (My 450D only goes up to auto 800, then you have to select 1600 and remember to switch back which is really annoying!).

I think it's also supposed to have internal lens calibration which might be cool, does that really work? Like, my current 450D with it's kit lens has some nifty barrel distortion, be nice to shoot and have a flat horizon

Now the waiting and waiting for it to arrive and try this thing out

Congratulations.  You'll like the upgrade from the Canon 450D.  I use ISO1600 a lot when taking pictures with my Canon T2i/T3i (550D/600D) cameras and I'm glad I have it.

Re: Finally ordered an upgrade (Canon SL1)

I think the noise characteristics of my Olympus E-510 (that I used previously) was similar to either the Canon 400D or 450D. I was basically limited to ISO800 unless it was extremely bright. Then I could use ISO1600 (but that was rare). With the Canon 18mp DSLR cameras that I have now, for smaller prints and resized images I've found using up to ISO5000 works well when using the auto-ISO feature. See my Camellia Festival pictures where the one of the dragon dancers was taken at ISO4000 (that is, on this week's Show Your Snaps thread).

Re: Finally ordered an upgrade (Canon SL1)

I'll check those thanks!

just for clarification, I use iSO1600 with my 450D but it only autos to 800, I have to...

pick iso

change it to 1600

then shoot,

then remember to change it back

edit: just checked your shots, those are CLEAN , that iso 5000 is cleaner than my 1600!

Thanks, I think it's about time... when I got my 450D it was 'last years model' in 2009, so I'm moving up from 2008 tech.. wow time flies!!!

Next I think I'll get a new horse for my wagon! LOL

You sure upgrade a lot. I replaced my 2003 10D with the SL1 last year. I'm sure you'll love the SL1.

Big congrats.

I'd recommend shooting RAW and performing those lens "corrections" in post, in order to keep things speedy in-camera.  Just a thought.

Enjoy!

Re: Finally ordered an upgrade (Canon SL1)

I'll try that too, I must say though, lately I've been into just shooting jpegs and processing those ( unless it's something really special I'm shooting

If you can get everything set up just right at the time of exposure, then you're fine shooting jpgs.  That single "slice" of the pie tastes just as good as the rest of the pie.

It's when you start making changes in Post that RAW really comes into its own.

Happy shooting!
