Canon 35mm F/1.4 II AF noise

Has anyone else with the new 35mm f/1.4 II noticed the somewhat abrupt clunk noise when the AF motor rapidly shifts focus from a distant subject to a very near subject, almost as though you can hear it hit a hard stop at one end of the focus range? If it grabs focus just before this hard stop then its practically silent, however if it 'misses' (as it does occasionally) then you can hear the clunk at one end of its travel, before it makes the adjustment back the other way.

No rattles if the lens is shaken (gently).

The USM motor is as quiet as any other L series lens I own, however this lens seems to make a lot more mechanical noise than the 16-35 F/4.0 IS, or 24-70 f/2.8 II when the 'hard stop' is met.

Did wonder if its because of the amount of metal, rather than plastic, used in its internal constriction, which wont have the same 'cushioning' effect.

Cheers!

Re: Canon 35mm F/1.4 II AF noise

I could make it to do that. I focused at infinity, then close, including at MFD, and it focused without that hard stop. It slows down right before it confirms AF but this is not unusual (with my 5D2).

How low is the light?

Many thanks for the reply. Only noticed it indoors, low light and low contrast subject, will try it outdoors in good light.

Re: Canon 35mm F/1.4 II AF noise

OK, test complete. Outdoors in better light its fine, it never misses focus and never hits the hard stops. The only thing I can hear is the sliding noise of the mechanics of the focus process when it adjusts from a focus at infinity to MFD (0.28M) - something that I wouldn't normally do on a day-to-day basis!

I wouldn't say that its an awful lot louder than my other L lenses, just a little if I'm being critical (if it didn't cost so much I'd never have paid any attention!).
