G9X - first 15 minutes out of the box

There's always a learning curve with a new camera!

I need to figure out how to change what activates the touch screen. I'm in P mode, and I'm inadvertently hitting menu items just trying to hold the camera and compose a shot.

I also need to find how to disable the focus rectangle. I don't want it to move all over the screen. I want it to stay centered.

I have the PDF manual and will start reading.

First images in low light show a big improvement over my S90.

Congratulations! I udgraded from the s95, and I found the G9x to be pretty easy to get the hang of! The s90 is a great camera, so I hope you enjoy your G9x!

Both problems were handled by enabling screen auto lock and setting to 3 seconds. Menu > Tools4.

I also disabled the Touch Shutter icon (Menu > Camera2). If I wanted a touch shutter, I'd just use a phone camera.

I agree with you about disabling the touch shutter function, but I absolutely find touch focus to be one of the best advantages of a touch screen on a camera. No more trying to move the focus spot to the right place.

Thanks for the encouragement about touch focus. I promise I'll give it another try after I get past the initial learning curve. I'm so used to focusing and re-positioning that it's second nature. But there may very well be a new, better way.

I'm with you.  I've had a G5X for a couple of months now, and I still don;'t like touch focus.  I do keep it turned on, hoping that I will learn to like it, but, to my style of shooting, it just seem counter intuitive.

One nice little feature on the G5X is any time you activate touch focus, you can then press the "menu" button to center the focus point.  I bet there's similar functionality on the G9X.

Glad you solved that. I upgraded my s95 because I kept trying to Focus via the LCD like I love to do on my phone.  I really hate recomposing, and I am loving all the touch screen functions. But we are all different. I just hope you enjoy your upgrade as much as I have.

Yes, the G9X has the same centering feature. A lifesaver after you get tired of chasing the square around the screen! LOL!

Now that is funny! And I appreciate the perspective. One of the challenges with, ahem, older eyes is that, while I can see the screen w/o reading glasses, it takes a split second or to to see it well. The camera needs to be at arm's length to read the screen the most quickly, but that's not my shooting position - my arms are bent when shooting. So it would take me longer to focus and get the shot using the touch focus, and I'm not even sure it would work right if I move the camera after focusing.

Do you like the touch shutter, too? One of the reasons I don't like it is that the camera moves when firing it.

You might actually find the touch focus system to work better than you're thinking. When you touch, you're not indicating which focus point to use (as is the case with moving the focus box around), you're indicating which element in the composition you wish to focus. If you touch to focus on a face, then the subject moves or you move the camera (but with the subject remaining in the screen), focus will move to remain on the face you selected. Give it a try.

Yes, I like touch shutter as well, and I use it 90% of the time. I do not have visual issues though. I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks. I will try it.
