This lens is worth every penny
20

I _really_ like this lens on my Olympus om-d em-1.  It focuses quickly, and where it's in focus, it's tack sharp, and the bokeh is as smooth as could be desired.

It does landscapes:

A mountain in the Eastern Sierras

Candids:

In the hot springs

Portraits:

On a hike

Sports in a relatively dark gym:

On the run

For what it is-- a 150mm equivalent lens-- I find it to be as perfect as I could ask for.

I have to agree with you

As much as I enjoy my M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO, the "little" 75mm f/1.8 is just a sublime lens when used with skill - you seem to have mastered that.

Great Landscape example.

Nice to see a good landscape with such a long lens. I find it difficult to shoot/compose an interesting landscape with such a long lens, but you've done a great job here.

A nice, short, well-illustrated summary. However, you forgot to mention, the lens just looks great, too. I think it dresses up any camera you mount it on.

Great examples from a great lens, I know it shouldn’t matter to us "serious photographers" but the lens is also a thing of beauty  I am currently debating with myself between it an the 60mm macro, the macro is probably going to win out as it is more useful to what I commonly shoot.

I love mine, too

And like the others said, it looks a million bucks (even though I got it for a steal from eBay).

The subject in frame three is clearly admiring the photographer's lens. 🤔

Re: This lens is worth every penny

Nice shots. Like others I am impressed with the first landscape image -- simply a nice image.

I have sweated over getting this lens, which is still very much on my radar screen. I am a pretty dedicated zoom user, and find that I just don't shoot my prime lenses that much.

However, since I shoot corporate events professionally, the idea of using the 75mm in low light conference room with the DTC is really inviting. Being able to get OOC images with a 300mm FOV @ f/1.8 would greatly enhance my low light shooting ability.

I'm still looking for that 'bargain' priced used one, but sooner or later will own this lens.

Greg,

If it's any help, I took these in the kind of environment you're thinking of, although there was some natural light available close by.

The first image (Eastern Sierra landscape) is wonderful!

The portraits are great as well. Normally what you would think is the primary application for such a lens but you prove that it can be used very well for landscape.

I love that lens, too!

Re: This lens is worth every penny

That's a fine gallery for the 75--well done!

Have been meaning to compare mine head-to-head against the ZD 35-100/2, as it's the only lens I can imagine competing against it. My lone 75 complaint is considerable fringing wide open with strong backlight, but knowing that I can usually work around it. The zoom is impeccable, but weights a ton.

Would love to see Oly make a big brother at around 120mm or so.

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Great Landscape example.

Thank you!  It's interesting-- once I started shooting landscapes with this lens, I started using it in conjunction with wider lenses.  There are definitely times when I see a feature that I want to capture where a tighter viewing angle definitely helps remove noise on the sides (if that makes sense)

Re: This lens is worth every penny

I find myself using the 12-40 for macro.  Yes, it's just 0.7x, but it gets the job done quite well, I think:

Peach flower (the flower is about 1cm tall)

I actually backed out, because I wanted the branch to be part of the composition, but you can definitely get closer.  I would say that if you're going for insects or things that would react to the lens, then yeah, the larger working distance of the 60mm would help.

Re: This lens is worth every penny

Thanks!

If I were doing an event shooting gig, I would either go with the 25mm f/1.4 or stick with your 12-40 if you find yourself needing the zoom versatility.  75mm is awesome for a lot of things, but if you're within a few feet of your subject, it can get really tricky.  Both of the people in those photos were pretty far away when I took their pictures.  That said, I'm really looking forward to using this lens for school plays.

Re: Great Landscape example.

Have seen more than one very impressive cityscape gallery taken with the 75, which compresses distance but not typically in a way that calls attention to itself.

The run-of-the-mill reaction to the lens is "Too long for portraits anywhere but outside so I have no need for it" which IMHO badly underestimates its usefulness. (Not that I'd demand everybody keep one in their bag.) It's a bit like how every telephoto is evaluated on whether it's a birding lens. Is that the only use for a tele lens? There are days you'd think so.

Cheers,

Rick
