Moving lens in Sigma 30mm F2.8 DN MFT

Dear photography enthusiasts,

I would ask a question concerning a lens I bought last week. It is Sigma 30mm F2.8 DN MFT black version. This is a product I purchased in Amazon warehouse. I notice the lens in the middle of it moves a few millimeters if I move the objective. One can even observe the movement of the piece of glass. But, the objective works very well when taking photos. It does not move freely and takes precise photos.

The piece of glass does not move if the camera is powered on. It moves if the camera is not powered on. Thus, one hears or even feels the piece of glass moving when carrying the camera on the neck.

My question is, does anyone has the same lens and notice the same movement? I wonder if the mechanistic will be worn out if I carry it around for a while.

Thanks a lot!

This lens rattles when it is not powered on. The same goes for all the other Sigma MFT lenses. And also most Lumix lenses with an OIS module.

Enjoy the lens, and don't worry about the loose element inside. It is normal.

This is normal on the 2.8 art lenses. No worries!

Thanks for the quick reply!

My lens has the smooth appearance that is different from the one you showed in the post.

I don't know if it is the same. Also, the manual says explicitly that the lens does not have image stabilization function. I learned that it can cause the camera to rattle (e.g. the Pentax K10D I owned before).

But will this movement not wear out the objective?

Thanks Fredrik! Do you know if there is a reason for that? And why art lens? Now I just notice it is indeed stated as an "Art lens".

Yes, you have the newer version of the lens, with the smooth metal finish. Other than cosmetics, they are the same.

I don't know if it is the same. Also, the manual says explicitly that the lens does not have image stabilization function.

That is indeed true. On Lumix lenses, it is the OIS element which rattles (when not powered). On the Sigma lenses, it is presumably the autofocus elements (lens group that moves when focusing) which is electromagnetically activated, hence, it is loose when not powered.

I don't think you need to worry about wear. The lens is designed to have a loose element inside, so presumably it is designed to not wear.
