AF Eye Control: Pros & Cons

I'm curious about anyone who has used the Canon cameras with the
Eye-Focus control. Is it a pain? Do you like it? Would you want a
camera with AF Eye-Control in it?

most of the responses here will be from people who 1- dont have eye control on the camera ...just "read about it". or 2- dont read the manual! i have an eos three i shoot professionaly and it works beautifully! there are situations where you might want to turn it off but thats why it has a SWITCH... i believe anyone who has read the manual and actually CALIBRATED THE CAMERA to their own eye would know what a beautifull thing it is to have a custom camera. and yes like it or not the eos 3 IS a pro camera just because its not the most EXSPENSIVE cameara in canons lineup dosn't men its not pro..great camera ...great functions...great lenses..nuff said

Nonsense!!

I have ECF. It doesn't work! Not reliably for most (that's why even you find yourself "turning it off") . . . and not at all for many. That is why Canon do NOT include it on ANY of their professional bodies, not the 1V, not the 1D and not the 1Ds. I've read the manual BTW.

It works for you . . . great! It doesn't for me . . . and many others. Your strong implication that I am therefore too stupid to read the manual, or too incompetent to master the rigours of calibration is not especially appreciated.

There is a reason that Canon opt not to have ECF on their top-tier bodies. As one of many, for whom the feature is totally non-functional, I think I know why this is.

I have an EOS Elan 7e and am very happy with the ECF, even though i wear glasses and shoot in Portrait mode over 90% of the time. I wish my D60 had ECF.

If I look at this thread,I come to the following conclusion:

The ones who don't like ECF,don't like it,because it doesn't work for them.Nearly noone said "it works, but I don't like it".So,if Canon can improve the reliability of ECF,nearly everyone will like it.

I don't disagree. I haven't said that it couldn't be improved. My statement was that it's just a feature that you can choose to use or not use. Hence, when it's OFF, it doesn't detract from the camera. If there were no option, then yes, it could be a 'con,' since it's not accurate enough to be 'perfect.' In my opinion, having a selectable feature, even if it's never used, AND doesn't detract from any other operation of the camera, can't be considered a 'con.' That's all. I thought the original question was general, vague, and only addressed the topic of including the feature as it has already been implemented. I don't think anyone would say that there is ANY feature that could not be improved. Different question, though.

I haven't used my EOS 3 for a long time, because I always used my 1D.But yesterday,I shot the whole day with my EOS 3 (daily newspaper)...and eye-control.And WOW....it's so much easier and faster than to choose AF points manually.I hope,Canon puts it in their digital cams soon.

BTW,it was also a pleasure to have "full frame" again.....and the big viewfinder.

ECF is wonderful (if it works for you). If it doesn't, just switch it off.

The only tiny downside is when you hand your camera to somebody and forget that it is calibrated to your eye. But, in the main, I don't hand my EOS (digital or 35MM) to non-SLR users. An experienced SLR user will have no problems.

ECF saves having to focus lock off centre and re-frame. I had it in the EOS 5 - the latest generations with up to 45 focus points makes it a killer (optional) feature.

Now, if only my D30 AF was up to the task in the way in which the EOS 5 was.
