Suggestions on body upgrade

Hey Folks,

I have a Canon 450D, still works perfect, but am thinking of moving up a step or two in that same family. I love the IQ of the camera, but the one thing I don't like, is auto  ISO only 'autos' up to 800. Then 1600 is the max, but you have to select it. Would like auto iso to be a range, like up to 1600, or up to 3200 so I don't have to keep picking one or the other. I don't need the newest new, so was thinking of an older refurb/good used body. Which ones after the 450D would do that, and maybe were 'better' for some other reasons I'm not considering?

thanks!

Ron

Re: Suggestions on body upgrade

Do you like the current body size?

If you prefer smaller DSLR, SL1 is pretty well priced, or the upgrade can be T5i for rebel series - both of them can be had for very good prices at this time.

Keep the 450D as backup or practice kit for young ones

Best of luck

Thanks, T5i sounds good, I do like a fuller sized body.

So from what you've seen, the T5i was a solid performer?

Re: Suggestions on body upgrade

what about the T5 (not the i) version, looks like just the single cross point focus is the only real thing I might miss over the i version. Its a bit slower on FPS, but, man, it's a good price!

Re: Suggestions on body upgrade

Actually T3i is already an upgrade over T5.

T3i / T4i(skip this one as it is not better than T3i actually) / T5i is a good upgrade.

Really?

The T4i and the T5i are virtually identical. It's not really known why the T5i was introduced so quickly after the T4i. There was an issue with the rubber grip on the T4i, turned white when in contact with skin, perhaps that was why it was replaced so quickly.  The T4i was discontinued and I'll bet it's almost impossible to find a new one anyway.

Check out the side by side comparison of the T3i,  T4i and T5i  and see for yourself.

Yes I skip the upgrade and got SL1, had T3i, it is still perfect for stills, but I was looking for better video performance with new lens , AF.
Have fun with photography.

Re: Suggestions on body upgrade

You have the SL1? Can I ask a few questions, that one is a good price..(the T4i s spendy!!!)

*Does it have HDR?

*Does it have highlight priority like my older 450D?

*How's the auto focus on moving objects, I like to shoot birds, in flight when I can.

*A review said the battery life was poor, is that true?

Thanks for all your help!

  1. Yes HDR in JPG
  2. Yes HTP is common
  3. Autofocus is similar to XSI with one center cross point, but does have Hybrid CMOS AF II(better than both T5i/T4i), for live view focusing (touch screen).
  4. Battery life is avg, you can say poor if you shoot a lot, this camera will need extra battery pack.
  5. Main difference is T4i/T5i comes with flip screen with touch funcion. SL1 is fixed and touch screen(can focus in live view which is kind of like smart phone).

It is an upgrade either way, but it's smaller, it is available at a lot of retail stores, you can take a look and order online

Re: Suggestions on body upgrade

Cool, thanks, I'm going for the body. Looks like body only is only 399.00. I don't care about video so don't need the newer kit lens, so it's a great deal. Ken Rockwells review really makes me want one, his high iso shots look great.

thanks for steering me this way and all your help, really appreciated!

Re: Suggestions on body upgrade

Very welcome and happy to share experience with photography.

If you don't mind refurbished kit, it does have 1 year warranty, canon sl1 with 18-55mm is stm lens is 330 plus tax with free shipping.
Comes in white or black *from canon USA website.

I would also check canonpricewatch or greentoe to see if you can get better deals

Best of luck

You'll notice a difference moving to the 18 MP sensor.

Autofocus starts to get really good from the T4i onwards.

The very latest Rebels are a big step up in a ton of ways.

The SL1 offers great bang for the buck, but personally I'd recommend getting a more capable (Rebel) first, then adding an SL1 as a second compact travel-type camera second.

Good luck in your quest,

Thanks! I'm more casual now a days, and budget budget budge, so I think I'll go for the SL1 and see how she treats me

There are certainly many compelling reasons to go with a more compact camera, that's for sure!  I've been using a 1" sensor camera for lots of stuff.

Go shoot whatever you'd like with the SL1.  And have a ton of fun!

Cool, some of the 1 inch sensor's do really well now a days

For me, the SL1 sounds cool, ... the price and IQ, and has the features my 450D lacks

Auto iso all the way to max

In camera HDR (just for fun)

Video

and a higher res same size sensor. I wouldn't mind if the camera was actually larger though

I'm selling another camera, so when that sells, I'll buy the SL1,

Thanks folks!

Re: Suggestions on body upgrade

I recently upgraded from the SL1 to the T6i. I must tell you there is quite a difference. I always thought the SL1 was a little small for my hands and the T6I and T5I fit much better. I also considered the 70d but could never see myself carrying that all day for it is significantly heavier. I consider the T6i a major up[grade over the SL1. With 24mp and digic 6 and lots more focusing points it is an amazing camera for the price. The pictures are absolutely outstanding and if you pixel peep they show a marked improvement over the SL1. Not that they were bad in the SL1 either. I suggest you go to a Sams or best buy and play with both before you decide

I have seen them on the refurb site already so it may be worth a look. It's a camera I don't see upgrading for quite some time. I picked it over the T6s because I do very little video and quite frankly have no use for the top screen. I am extremely pleased.

Hmm.  He might have just mixed up the T4i and T5i (both of them being virtual twins), and both being much more advanced than the earlier T3i.
