Sigma 30mm F1.4 DN is Horribly HUGE :(

"Horribly Huge" is an exaggeration, but after being spoiled by M43 tiny prime (switch from canon), I have lost my appetite for "Normal Size" lens.

Here is a comparison of Panasonic 25mm f/1.4 vs Olympus 25mm f/1.8, vs Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DN

well, it is made for APS-C sensor.  If it is too big for you, don't buy it.

1. Stop exaggerating, its not huge. Just a little bigger than the others.

2.Choice is great, if u don't want to buy the 30 f1.4 but something smaller, than don't complain.

3. The better the the lens the bigger they get, m43 has lots of compromise design lenses. That compromise iq or f stop . But there are few that are "no compromise" designs.  I am glad sigma made this lens.

I don't own the PL25mm, but from all the reviews and user opnions I never got the impression it is a compromise design. Do you expect the Sigma to be that much better to justify it being "just a little bigger"?

Peter --

As Dennis said, Sigma is a small company and designs lenses for multiple mounts; the APSC image circle is almost 40% larger diameter than m4/3 so optics designed for the former are well oversized for the latter.

i am a happy owner of all three Sigma f2.8 primes, all of which share the same oversized design characteristics.  Even if this lens does not meet your needs (and it doesn't meet mine), having more vendors in the m4/3 market is a good thing and we all should hope that they have good sales to encourage more offerings.

i read somewhere that the secondary lens sales rate -- what the trade calls the "attach rate" -- for m4/3 is something like three times that of dSLRs.  i hope so!

its seem BIGGER than the old Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC for Canon

dennis tennis wrote: well, it is made for APS-C sensor. If it is too big for you, don't buy it.

I had a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC (on my Canon DSLR).  Judging by the photo, I would say it almost as big....if not BIGGER.  I was hoping that the "mirrorless" version of Sigma 30mm f/1.4 would be much smaller. That is why I'm disappointed in the size.

CameraSize.com lack thephoto for Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC (on Canon or Nikon DSLR), so I cannot do a size by size comparison.

Hopefully, someone will have a photo of Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC vs Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DN.

Its not that much bigger than Sigma`s 60mm, just a little longer and fatter, its still a pretty small lens.

The 25 f1.4  is a good performer, but its also one of the few 1.4 lenses, faster than most. I expect the 30 1.4 to be very sharp, even wide open. It should be. Otherwise it's a failure. Sigma also has a 30 1.4 for slrs but it's not great.

My point: m43 is nice and compact. I don't need the smallest lenses. I want great iq and am willing to invest in  some bigger lenses to accomplish that. I have a Nikon 105 macro lens, it's not small but the output it solid. Like I said, I am not bothered by extra size and weight of the sigma. But it has to deliver, if it's not better then the leica than yeah, I don't understand why it's bigger.

I'll wait until some reviews come in, before deciding. At this low price point, and considering all the hoopla, this might become a "must have" lens.

And I need to choose between getting the M43 or the Sony APS-C version.

Sigma's 60mm is almost exactly the same size as the PL25, in the middle of the comparison picture above. 'A little longer and fatter' seems a bit of an understatement.

Wait, is the Sigma with hood ON?  Seems that way to me.  The hood itself is 1/3 the total length.  In any case, if I have a Canon dSLR, I'd double-duty a Canon-mount Sigma 1.4 with a smart adapter to the m43 and 'justify' the size issue.

The Sigma 60 is f2.8. This Sigma 30 DN is f1.4.  They're in a different league altogether.

The PL 25 may be smaller, but it must be a 'compromised design.'

The 'entrance pupil size determines everything' brigade might disagree.

The PL25 is too large compared with the 60/2.8, according to the entrance pupilists.

Whatever the case may be, most OEM lenses these days are compromised through the physical smallness of their designs, and use intrinsic software within the camera to compensate.

Some (if not all) of the Sigma lens designs have no communications of such nature, and the camera records exactly what it sees, with no compensation. This is achieved by using an optimized, larger lens design, which should produce better results, all else being equal.

It's bigger than my 25mm nokton which people like to say is a huge lens. I don't really think either is huge though. The 25mm panaleica always looks really fat to me though.

2x isn't "little".

1.1-1.3x is " little".

Panasonic 25mm 1.4 is little bigger than 25mm 1.8 Oly.

Sigma is already a lot and it is huge with the hood.
