Hello Jonathan,

Thank you for your message.

I will definitely check out the 200 f2.8 (mk ii?) as you suggest.

I think I've occasionally seen it....but not really taken much notice....so far.

Thanks again for your help and advice.

You're quite welcome. Optically, it's practically identical to the 135L, with the exception of the focal length and aperture, which is to say that it's absolutely fantastic with IINCREDIBLE bokeh!

Put it this way:  if you buy it and isn't your last long lens, I doubt that you would ever regret the choice and think you would be hard pressed to want to sell it.  Truly a gem.

Gentlemen,

Thank you ever so much for your intelligent and concise advice. (you are Americans, yes?!.....ha ha ....i couldn't resist.....but I'm almost allowed to make a gentle joke at your expense: I'm married to a Californian.......and brilliant and intelligent she is.....though concise wouldn't be a word I'd ever use to describe her.....)

Speaking of the wife.....i was just attempting to explain my upcoming lens/camera body purchasing logic......and I realised that I could just show her these threads with your answers and advice:  she would then never ever doubt that I was making not only the correct purchasing decisions but also spending our hard earned money on what previously she might've considered "un-necessary luxuries", but through the power of your highly intelligent, thoughtful and dare I say it "life enhancing" advice....she now will view me spending our hard earned money money on lenses and cameras as somehow vital....important....essential even. We will become happier, healthier...wiser....kinder to small children and animals.......better human beings! all through the simple act of buying camera equipment.

Gentlemen....I salute you!

She's from California, huh? Just show her this...

"It's like, totally worth it!"

OK, you should be free to buy whatever you want now

Hello everyone again,

My last question to you all (for now)....

I'm wanting to buy myself a long lens.

Why?

The answer to this question might indicate whether the 135 is the best choice for you. The 135 is a brilliant lens, but perhaps the 200mm f/2.8 would be a better choice for you.

I currently have a 24-70 f/2.8 mk ii

I will only be using a long lens occasionally and would prefer a smaller and more discreet lens than any of the big, white 70-200/70-300/70-400 zooms. (tho the 70-200 f4 is seems a possibility because its not "too" huge).

My options seem to be something like the 100mm f2.8 L.......but I've tried it out and because I'm not massively interested in the macro capabilities, I found its more general auto focus speed a tad slow.

I like the look of the 135 f2. The images it takes appear extremely good to me.

And I could use it quiet happily with a x1.4 or x2 extender, yes?

With the 1.4 probably yes. With the 2.0, perhaps not.

If anyone has an opinion about this or advice you could offer me, I would appreciate your input very much.

Thanking you all in advance for your time and consideration.

Though because I'm in the UK (I'm assuming this site is USA based, yes?) would it still be worth it for me (because of shipping costs and import duty etc)?

Hi there!

You can always set a price alert on pricerunner.co.uk

The 135 is indeed an amazing lens, I totally love mine and it's one of the reasons I refuse to llet go of my Canons

AF is notably slower with 135/2L + Extender.

Even with the newest Extender 1.4x III, AF with the 135L is notably slower. Optical results are good, if not quite as good as without the Extender. I would not want my 135L to be my only telephoto, but I am reasonably content with my 135L, an Extender 1.4x III, and a 400/5.6L.

Every review/report/article I have seen, on the subject of using an Extender 2x, has indicated a lesser level of satisfaction with the image quality.
