Opinions wanted: Best compact Samsung camera?

I currently have an NX1 and an NX2000.  Both are wonderful cameras, but even the NX2000 with 20-50mm lens is a bit on the large size.  I want something small enough to slip into a pocket.  Sure I have a cellphone camera, but there's no zoom and the quality isn't all that super.

What is the current best compact camera that Samsung makes?

That would be the NX500, but it's about the same size as the NX2000.  As soon as you add a zoom lens you're getting out of pocket camera range unless you have big pockets.  There's the NX mini that might be a little smaller and performance limited.

Do you know that Samsung appears to be exiting the camera market?

NX mini is much smaller than the NXxxx cameras, and the lenses are small, especially the 9(?)mm. I was waiting for the NX mini 2 in the summer, but that didn't happened.

I highly recommend the NX mini system. It has three very good lenses. 9mm is compact. 17mm is FAST at 1.8 and has OIS! 9-27mm is versatile and also has OIS. Basically it gives you the basic kit most people need in a super compact package.

I have it. It was a very good camera on it's release but it's better to buy Panasonic LX7. Now there are much better compact cameras anyway. EX2F has good picture quality, very solid build quality and ergonomic operations (ffully articulated screen!), but is missing touch screen.

Talk to the hand, as you have nothing to say.

The first camera I considered was the NX Mini, and if Samsung were going to support the format, I'd probably buy it, but $500 for a dead-end format is a bit much.

For the NX Mini with 9mm and 17mm I paid only a little bit more than for a Sony RX100 Mk 1. For this I got a tiny and slow 24mm equivalent and a fast and small 50mm equivalent, which is very good even wide open. The RX100, as a compact, is definitely a dead end, but you might consider it, since it's a camera with a better image quality than any long discontinued compact from Samsung, if you don't like the Mini.

For a RAW photographer definitely. If a JPEG shooter beware the inflexible firmware. From what I understand it left in many of the EX1 bugbears. Offsets in contrast, saturation etc. are not transparent and grey out options. The firmware is very crude and I would read the reviews carefully.

It is a very capable top end camera in image quality with plenty of controls but is has pretty basic point and shoot menu options. The OP should check discussions on this forum.

Another vote for the  EX1/2 if using raw.

All my recent shots here are shot using my old EX1 using RAW.

That was an interesting read. There is a bit of nostalgia on other forums for CCD sensors with the image quality which was lost with the more efficient CMOS sensor.

EX2f reviews tend to show barrel distortion wide open but I think the later firmware solved that. It is always amusing with the Panasonic reviews which talk about the efficient Leica lens showing no barrel distortion in their compacts but is is more likely the software. The Panasonic Leica lenses are efficient at gathering dust that is for sure.

Also one review missed that if you clicked in the front dial an exposure offset dial came up.

One funny thing was I bought the Olympus XZ-1 as I wanted HD video but the Olympus video was excruciatingly awful so that taught me to listen to what reviews said. I did buy an EX2f later and wish I had kept it.
