Olympus: Make 2x teleconverter!

I actually want now olympus to make 2x teleconverter that supports 40-150 and 300mm. It would really hit nicely for a $400-500 price tag!

I would use 40-150mm way more as it would be 80-300mm f/5.6 and be very usable lens next to 75-300mm. It would not be as sharp as 300mm is but when 40-150mm already is as sharp as 75mm f/1.8 then there is sacrifice be made to give that zoom range!

It would be very huge hit against panasonic 100-400mm at once as both would be f/5.6 at 300mm. And then 300mm vs 400mm is fairly small difference (1.25x).

And 300mm would become 600mm f/8. That would be super sharp still and offer such a blow to 100-400mm because then you can just remove the teleconverter when needing to use 300mm instead 600mm. And as panasonic-leica is at 400mm sharpest at f/8. It would not make much difference if it would be on olympus sharp wide open at f/8.

Now thinking that. It would be best option for Olympus to make quickly to counter the 100-400mm benefits!

Why I would buy 100-400mm for 2400, when I could put 300-500 to 2x converter? As I already have invested 1500 for 40-150mm +1.4x converter, putting little extra would be nothing!

Now, lets compare Robin Wong picture he made to back up his claim about 40-150mm being almost as sharp as 75mm f/1.8:

Which one is the 75mm f/1.8?

So would there be enough sharpness to spare for 2x teleconverter at f/5.6?

The 1.4x doesn't weaken the sharpness visually much, if at all (we do know it is there because it is mathematically proven weakening) as you can see from Robin Wong excellent test results.

I would buy pre-order one in first day. Would you buy one?

For me it would be the reason not to buy 300mm f/4 as I am not so for long ones and I don't need f/4 but if it would cost 1200 I would take one

Re: Olympus: Make 2x teleconverter!

Am not completely enamored with the EC20, while a huge fan of the EC14. It seems best with the 90-250/2.8 and 300/2.8, less so with my teles while the EC14 is a boon with them. Plus,  the 2-stop hit is fatal in anything but direct sun.

I'd like a 1.4x converter that works with more lenses than the MC14.

Cheers,

Rick

I agree. I sold my EC-20 because it really didn't work favourably with my 90-250mm. The EC-14 is excellent and you can use it effectively on any lens.

It's generally been acknowledged that a 1.4x extender is the best and a 2x is pushing things. That's why some have produced 1.7x extenders, just to eke out a compromise.

Anyone who has used a series III Canon EF 2x converter with one of the new Mk II big white EF primes primes will absolutely disagree with this statement. In the hands of an expert user ( see the work of famed bird photographer Arthur Morris) superb results can be obtained, demonstrating that the limitations of a good 2x with an excellent lens are less to do with the optics and more to do with the skill of the photographer.

I said that it's '...generally been acknowledged...', which holds true. Any long lens will test the photographer more than the camera system, with or without extender. And without trying to blow my own trumpet, these have been shot handheld with my 90-250mm f2.8, with and without the EC-14 (I do have somewhat of an idea of how to use long lenses):

Or perhaps something like this, also shot handheld while on a moving houseboat:

Additionally, there are those that seem to disagree with your prognosis:

My EC-20 worked reasonably well with my 14-35mm f2 and 35-100mm f2, but not as well as the EC-14 and, as I said, not very well on the 90-250mm f2.8. And in my sports photography days I tried to use the EC-20 with the 90-250mm, on a monopod as you do, and the results were always disappointing.
