EOS 1000D Body: what lens to use?

Hi,

I have received as a gift a EOS 1000D Body, no lenses.

What do you suggest to buy? Actually i'm evaluating this configuration:

- 24mm STM 2.8 + 50mm 1.8 STM

or

- 18-55 STM version

Or do you have some other suggestion? I don0t have a large budget, and i'm not a pro, for that i'm evaulating good lens but without stellar cost.

Thanks very much

P.S: the 1000D is a good entry level reflex or is crap respect to 1200D?

Depends on how you want to shoot. Both options I think are as good as it gets for <$250 USD. The STM zoom is optically good, has image stabilization, and is convenient. But the brace of primes gives you wider maximum apertures and perhaps leads to a more thoughtful way of shooting - for example changing perspective rather than simply 'zooming'.

Or do you have some other suggestion? I don't have a large budget, and i'm not a pro, for that i'm evaulating good lens but without stellar cost.

An absolute steal of a deal is the EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM for just $130 from Canon USA refurbished (good as, maybe better than new and same 1 yr Canon USA warranty).

Thanks very much

The 1000D is, or I should say was, a good entry level SLR.  It's got pretty much the same 10mp sensor as the 40D I'm still happy with. But it is very dated compared to current entry level bodies that have 2x the sensor resolution, better high ISO performance and video capabilities. But as a gift, it's great. Certainly better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

IMHO, YMMV.

I would choose the 24 and 50mm STM primes, unless you really need the convenience of a zoom. I prefer the primes for their low light ability and shallower depth of field when desired.

But the quality of a shot made on 1000d will be good like on 1200 or really worse?

I don't know, sorry!  Likely it depends on the shot.

Up to ISO 400, probably the same.

Pick up a cheap used 18-55 IS for about $50 used on Ebay. Or "splurge" for the newer $100 STM version new. By the cheap prime lenses everyone else has been recommending. The 55-250 STM is quite nice as well.

The 1000D is capable of very nice images.

My 2 cents.

If you don't know which focal lengths you like most (and none of us do when starting out) the 18-55 is a safe choice; if you happen to like 24mm a lot the 24 2.8 is cheap, you can get it later (it lets in more light) or go for another focal length. If there's a store nearby you could also try both.

Re: EOS 1000D Body: what lens to use?

really depends what are your subjects, I shoot indoors so <50 mm and anything below f/2.8 is ideal, I would definitely recommend the 50mm f/1.8 STM or the 24mm f/2.8 STM, both are amazing value! If you ant to step up for imagine sharpness pick up 35mm f/2 IS for only $450, another awesome lens for the value

Re: EOS 1000D Body: what lens to use?

My first DSLR was a 1000D with kit lens 18-55 IS + 50 f/1,8 II back in 2008. I took some great images with this set up! But don't expect great low light / high ISO performance.

I think it is important to have a zoom so I would recommend getting the 18-55 and if budget allows the 50 f/1,8 rather than 24 f/2,8 since you won't notice significant difference from the zoom comparde to what the 50 f/1,8 is capable of in terms of low light / thin DOF. I currently have the 18-135 IS STM zoom which is slightly more expensive than the 18-55 but great for the wider focal range.

Good luck and enjoy!

When I had my first DSLR, after some time I thought how useless focal range is 18-55mm, and I could not imagine shooting with prime lens. Prime lenses looked like "rare species" to me at that time. Now I appreciat how wide range the 18-55mm lens has, and how awesome are prime lenses.

I believe you need to get that kit lens, spend that money, and learn from it. Maybe you´ll absolutely like that lens, maybe you´ll want more/different later. We cannot make it for you. That STM kit lens is very good and sharp lens for what it is and what it costs. Maybe you add 50mm STM for portraiture and shallow depth of field playing later.

I have the Canon 1000D (aka Rebel XS) with the 18-55 is lens.  Very good shooter.  Lens is sharp and gives you some zoom range.  My issue is that the kit is so bulky that i do not like hauling around the DSLR.  I usually use a Canon S120 even though the IQ and low light is not as good as my 1000D

i also have an original 50/1.8.  I like the large aperture, but i find the perpective too tight on a crop sensor camera.

The 24mmSTM/2.8 is the lens that I have always wanted.  The 35mm eqivalent is about 38mm which is about the perfect perpective to for me.  If a view looks good to my eye, i can shoot with that lens and i get the shot i want more or less.  Zooming with my feet with a fixed lens adds to the experience imo.

Up here in Canada, the 24mm came out at CAD$169.  I had hoped that it would eventually go on sale or be offered in Airmiles.  About 2 months ago, the price shot up to CAD$199 because of the CAD drop.  Last week, Canon had a sale at CAD$179.  I finally pulled the trigger.

So far I have been happy.   I think the 24mm will be the lens that i use 90% of the time.  Decent aperture. Sharp.  Very small and light on the 1000D.  I may lug and shoot the 1000D more now.
