Which 3rd party telephoto to get for the NX1 (manual focus)
1

I'm loving my NX1 even though there isn't a telephoto other than the 50-150 'S' which I should be getting in a few weeks (I had to return it for exchange). I know that i can crop video to get the focal length that I need but I'm thinking about getting something additional (I think I have a problem:-) , like a 70-300mm maybe Cannon, Nikon or another brand.  I Know that i would be shooting manual and that's ok.  My budget is between 800.00 - 1300.00 USD.  What are your suggestions on what to purchase? I also know that I will need to get an adapter......

Thanks

How about FD 300mm L f4? It seem you can get one in good condition around $4-500. Plus 1.4x teleconverter. The IQ from the samples I've seen looked outstanding wide open and even w/ the telelconverter you get usable 420mm f5.6. That's 450mm f4 and 630mm f5.6!

You read my mind! I bought the same lens and TC a couple of months back and absolutely love it. I was surprised at how, relatively, easy it is to handle and hand held shots are generally a breeze. IQ is best at f4 or one stop down.

That's great it also handles well! Sounds like a great set up. Enjoy and share some shots!

if you want to shoot the moon , you may consider the 800mm f8 Samyang, its cheap for about 250 USD

I got a used Nikon 300mm f/4D AF-S IF-ED, for $600. Though the previously referred Canon FD 300mm L f4 looks like a better bang for buck! I was originally aiming for a used Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM however was a little out of my price range at the time ($850-$950 used, $1100 new) and you can't control the aperture manually. Otherwise I hear that lens is impressive sharp for the price, with possibility of cropping to get further reach.

I attached a couple uncropped, miniminal processed images with the Nikon 300mm F/4D (Lens Correction via Profile and Chromatic Aberration removal in Lightroom)

The Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 is the best bang for the buck i think.

Here in Europe it only costs 300 €, but i am a little bit worried because of don't having image stabilization.

At 300mm i think it is going to be difficult to get a sharp handhold picture and focus peaking isn't always that reliable.

really wish there is a smart adapter out there so that OIS can work, long lenses really benefit from OIS.

Re: Which 3rd party telephoto to get for the NX1 (manual focus)

I'm really leaning towards the Canon 70-300mm L lens but I'm going to use it a lot for video so I'm not sure if I would be able to stabilize the video, any thoughts on that?
