Wow, what a defensive and offensive reply

Wow! but its acceptable to you for someone to come on and start slagging other peoples choices off, and giving ridiculous reasons why.

at the same time. I can imagine a hundred reasons for that thread that are completely different than to prescribe one's behaviour.

A hundred reasons wow, way too much time on your hands.

its either the PEN or a Russian model camera in the north pole

Those who think the Pen F has style and looks great are those who also think that a Jaguar E type with 24" rims and a body kit looks great and stylish.

The only guilt you should feel about is being conned into the hype and marketing.
It offers no significant improvement over the EM5 II, yet here in Oz it costs several hundred dollars more than the EM5 II, thats what you need to feel guilty about!
Here's the kicker, it's the most expensive oly, yet it doesn't have PDAF, weather sealing, not as ergonomic, has a swing out lcd, no improvement in ISO.
I can't for the world of me figure out why it's the most expensive oly (actually it's the most expensive m4/3 camera), the only theory that comes to mind is that oly is going for form over function with the PEN F, but they haven't been able to pull it off.

Apple has made it so that how we look doing something is part of how it is done...is there any movie where the actors are not using an Apple laptop? Or an iPhone? No. They all use the Apple products cause they look cool.

And yes we pay for fashion. Any car over a Toyota Tercel is overpurchase. Now the Apple car is gonna be very small, very cool, very beautiful and very important to look cool in it. Johnny Ives must be killing himself to make it look good.

You can buy a Toyota Tercel, but don't expect a self respecting American female to ever adorn your ride. To get a girlfriend over a 7 you need a Lexus 3 series. To get attention a 5 series BMW, to get the benefit of the doubt a 7 series BMW, the new iPhone could not make it a 7, the Apple people made us wait for the coming 7, that is when fashion will dictate an iPhone with no buttons at all!

So there is a bit of that with the PEN-F. PEN...it is no coincidence that the most loved thing we all hold is the PEN, a Parker, Cross, or a $ 895 Montblanc PEN.

Now the PL7 does not have a silent mode, and if you need a silent moment not to wake the baby, to disturb the priest, to take away or insult the speaker, go ahead and click clack your way into a woosh or a shut up and your careeer will be ruined. Yeah Peter interrupted the CEO with that noisy camera yeaaaah. Here comes the stapler. Of course there are other silent cameras, but how you got the engineering path into a PEN-F and brought the Olympus benefits into that final benefit...the skin tones, the stabilization, the features, the colors, the class, and now the silent, finally.

And yes, the PEN-Fs small series at half the weight of the PEN-F and the same features, with $ 0.20 cents of weather proofing and 4K and faster AF will cost more. Can't wait for 2017.

Or just buy a Leica for $ 7995 and a couple lenses for $ 6000 each. You know the Leica primes, the zooms you hopefully do not have to ask the price of.

Did Lexus upsell you from a 250 to a 300 to a 350RX to a 400 to a 430 to a 460LS? Did Mercedes upsell you from a 230c (that was a great car) to a 300 to a 430 to a 500 to a 600S? Yes! Yes!

I remember recently I saw an old tired retired doctor listening to the Mercedes salesman..."let's see your lease payment is now $ 1785 a month, this new model (that was the upsell pitch), the payment will be 2250 a month," The doctor's 75 year old wife was popping celebrex pills to tame her arthritis ... my good friend has 5 ex-wives all getting alimony he makes 2 million a year and drives a Kia (that is like a plastic surgeon who uses a CVS disposable $5 camera ha ha ha with charge light announcement feature and hole OVF ha ha ha).

America, love it or buy it. The alternative is some comrade from Russia with a 20 pound camera. They must call those the Polar (oid) model for when you walk to the north pole I can see from Kiev.

But all seriousness, the PEN-F is a social camera. You can still pull it out of your jacket pocket and take pictures socially without looking like you need those chest harnesses with padded rests of those photographers in the Barmitzvah 12 hour party. You know the Hasselblad bricks.

I use an E-PL5 ... you can set the anti-shock setting to 1/8s to nullify this.
Sports photographers might not like it (would they be using this camera anyway?) but a 125ms delay makes zero difference to most situations.

Re: Finally, a PEN-F review with some self-deprecating humor

The PEN F didnt turn out to be the camera i hoped it would be and more than happy with my E-P5 and GM1 and all at half the price of a PEN F (e-p5 was 2nd hand) £1000 is crazy for PEN F

Just wish the e-p5 had weather sealing, PDAF focusing, a bit better grip, better low light iso, silent shutter and a bit smaller and lighter.

Chop out that flash or EVF for hot shoe only and this all seems doable to me.

come on E-P6!! wonder what panasonic will pop up with next

Hi, actually the 1/8 delay does not solve SS issues. I wish it did!

E-PL7 is 3 ounces lighter than the PEN-F but:

-it has no quiet mode for speeches, church, baby not to wake,

-it has no sex appeal, it was a boring camera all of its life

-Pen-F has 5 axis instead of 3

-Pen-F has 20 megs

-Pen-F has newer technology, faster burst

-Pen-F has fancy PL3 flash with perfect bounce

-PL7 plus $ 250 VF-4 weigh .5 ounce less than PEN-F, in other words, same weight

-PL7 with VF-4 looks like the men from Mars are on top of your camera

-PEN-F has style and looks great

-PEN-F has 50 mb mode

those benefits take the $ 500 PL7 plus the 250 VF-4 at only $ 500 more for the PEN-F

10 benefits for $ 500 are $ 50 per benefit, a bargain

and the PEN-F is still jacket pocketable and party social sized, it has no hump on top like a big camera to pull out at a party

So don't feel guilty!

Very interesting comments.

So how do you like your Pen F?  Has it improved your photography?

I waited for the F to arrive,  and I think it looks really nice,  but the goofy swing out screen killed it for me. I was able to purchase a new E-P5 body for $329.00 a few weeks ago,  and I am a happy camper.

If not for the screen, I might have bought the pen f.

No the screen is very nice and tight.

The silent mode, the EVF, the newer technology each is worth $ 200 each.

Is sex appeal the same as style and looks great, or are they two different items? If different, does the Pen F have sex appeal, or only style?

Just having a little fun

If you like the camera, you should get it if it is worth the cost to you, regardless of the reasons.

Much smarter to spend $900 on the E-M5 Mark II

The single biggest problem with the Pen cameras has been the lack of a viewfinder which means you have to hold the camera out to compose and press the back to shoot and try to visualize the scene with the glare on the LCD back. The E-M5 MK II with the 14-42mm lens that sells as a bundle for $900 is a far better deal with a far better camera in every respect.

The electronic viewfinder provides high enough resolution to be effective and it amplifies the light and with a push of the shutter release you can see the scene as it will be taken and even boost the EV with a second push to see if that improves the exposure.

Great color rendition. Already have investment in Olympus glass and plan on making more. Can't afford Leica so it's a no-brainer.

Check on all the above. Weight issue not much of a factor for me but quiet mode, good looks, IS, beefed-up MP and better flash all coolio features. 50MB hi res mode is also something neat to use for architecture and landscape, too.

Don't forget the built-in EVF that's about equal to the EM-5 Mii, missing from the other PENs and a major reason why I've not pulled the trigger on a PEN so far.  Don't want the Martian look for my camera with an EVF sitting on the hot shoe.

If the new front creative dial some kvetch about now, that I actually plan using a lot, and a major selling point for me, is as solid state as I hope it is, and doesn't fall off with repeated use, it'll be a camera to cherish.

Why you should feel guilty of spending 1200 on the Pen-F

if you need to contemplate this statement, then most likely you should indeed be feeling guilty about it. This is a hobby for most of us, so everyone sure are free to expense the way he/she want , but of course again almost all of us live with a limited budget, so we rationalize and buy within reason and context. And if one need to made so many argument / excuse / reason , whatever you call it to justify the action, then might be its time asking if that action actually is within reason and context. Is there other less glamorous, less desirable gear that do the same job and might be even doing it better for you the photographer. Do you buy it just so you have that POSH value .. you know, ask yourself and be true to it .. No there is nothing wrong about 1200.00 for the Pen-F, there are others that are even less worthy out there. Its not the worst nor is it the best by all account.

Let's admit it, someone suffering from GAS and making excuse; its not like we are immune to that
