The Unexpected Hunter
8

Hello everybody,

I stepped out my front door a few days ago to be greeted by this Egret, and with the Panasonic 100-400mm causing serious G.A.S. pains I grabbed my G7 and slapped on my 100-300mm in hopes that it might quell my lust for that beautiful hunk of glass.

I forgot to set my camera to RAW + JPEG and I'm sorry I did, because I think the Panasonic 100-300mm did quite well. Well enough to make me realize I don't really need to make a $1800.00 dollar G.A.S. raid on my savings account!

All the following shots were hand held most were with the lens wide opened at full zoom

Had I bought the GX8 rather than the G7 I'd probably still have G.A.S. for the 100-400mm because dual IS but since the G7 doesn't have IBIS like my E-M10.

Excellent work, almagest

That outfit certainly does the job. Those portrait shots of the bird really say something in that respect.

Good job! I am also happy with the same set up. And I learned something new about Egrets. I'm always shooting them around wetlands and canals and all I ever catch them with is fish. That was quite a "chunky" rodent.:-)

Thanks Jack,

Like you, I associate Egrets with wetland areas. As I indicated those shots were taken over a period of a few days. In this instance, I stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, and I saw it out the corner of my eye. It was about 40 yards away and slowly walking towards me, at about 25 yards it slowed down to a cat like stalk and then froze striking position and stayed frozen until I finished my smoke. At that point I decided I wanted that pose so slipped back into the house, got the camera changed the lens and ran back outside.

And wouldn't you know it, I missed the initial strike! By time I got back outside he already had the Mole by the head and was trying to gobble it down. I sure am sorry I missed that first strike! Not as sorry as the mole however.

This lens has gotten some poor press from users who do not know how to make it function properly.  You got it right with the egret !  Good shots.  I sill want the extra 100 mm from the 100-400 because I do a lot of wildlife shots and quite a few telephoto-macro shots too.  I suspect that the new lens will be easier to master than the 100-300.  The 100-300 will not leave the arsenal when the new lens arrives.  More likely, it will wind up on a second body.

Nice set.  Really interesting to see it eating the mole. I guess we have enough wet lands around here that our many egrets don't need to hunt moles.  It would certainly be nice if they did - moles can be a real pain in the grass.

In bright light, your 100-300, and my 75-300, do a nice enough job to help relive the gas pain the new tele glass generates.

Thanks Jim,

It's a shame that Panasonic won't update the 100-300mm. If they could just improved the sharpness a tad at the long end and update the IS without a significant price increase I'd have G.A.S. pains I couldn't recover from!
