If you could get the 18-105 VR or 18-55 lens with it, the D3300 is superior in every image quality related criteria, particularly low light performance, dynamic range, color depth and resolution. But as others wrote, it will not auto-focus your lenses. The D300 is well built and has a better autofocus system and works fine in good light, so a D300 will last a long time but so will any modern camera. My D90, with slightly better low light and DR than the D300 has been a rugged and abused workhorse with 200,000 frames but it does not get much use now except by my GF who prefers it over my D7000 and D800.
Given your preferred shooting subjects, if in good light, the D300 will do fine although it would not be taken with you as often because it is larger and heavier than D3300. I shot my D90 more simply because it was small enough and light enough to be with me much more often than my D800 with its 2.8 or 1.4  lenses. The D3300 is a great little walking around camera while the larger heavier cameras are more for when you go out intending to take serious shots for amateur or pro sessions.

That's a good price. I got lucky a couple weeks back and got 1 for $218 but it only had 597 clicks on it fro KEH.

puttin,

597 clicks?! Are you SURE that's all?! I don't mean to question, but that sounds ridiculously low! It's barely getting broken in, at that point! And I thought *I* had done well when I bought my D700 with around 4k clicks on it!

I checked it on 2 sites, nikonshuttercount and photome and both said the same thing. The camera looks like it was not used.

Puttin,

Wow! That's pretty surprising! I'm wondering if it was a case where the shutter was replaced, the camera cleaned up, and then put up for sale. Hopefully, for your sake, that WASN'T the case, and the camera, including all of the rest of the camera (buttons, dials, etc.), will last you well and long!

Good luck, and enjoy the camera!

I guess it's possible the shutter was replaced but the camera just looks like it was not used and all the buttons look new and feel tight like when new.

Puttin,

If that's indeed the case, then what an amazing find! I still use my D300 quite a bit, and with the exception of it not registering the battery in the grip for some odd reason, it still works great! Yes, the low-light performance and dynamic range could be better, but it's still a great camera, IMHO! Besides, that's what the D500 is for, eh?!

Enjoy!

Age old debate a great deal on yesteryear best tool versus today's best but entry.

If pure IQ and resolution is what you want get the D3300 the sensor in there is so far superior.   yeah there will those D300 lovers posting some really good pictures.  The D300 was great and can still produce great picture, but unless you need high FPS, good bright / fast action focus the D3300 has a far superior sensor / resolution.

AS others have noted the lens you have won't focus with the D3300 and the reality that sensor is so good you should consider upgrading your lens.   EVen on D300 you will be selling the camera a bit short with those lens.  For candid photos your iPhone will do as well as the two cameras but maybe for low light action and different prospective the DSLR will produce a better result.

D5300 for $497 new and with full Nikon warranty

The D300 was a good camera in 2007 when it was introduced and I know as I bought one and used it for several years. But a good camera in 2007 is a not a good camera in 2016 anymore than a circa 2007 laptop running Windows XP.

My choice would be the D5300 that has 24MP and built-in GPS and is selling at the bargain price of less than $500 brand new and with the full Nikon warranty.

This autumn I got a D300 in mint condition with 6 months warranty from a photoshop in Sweden, only 1200 actuations (checked in Photoshop with EXIF). It smelled new camera! It is joining my old D300 which I bought 2007 and with 210 000 actuations and still going strong!

The price for that with 1200 clicks was just 200 USD.

I disagree with this analogy and concept. Sure, a newer camera is going to be better in several ways than an older camera, but that doesn't mean the older camera won't still take great photos! This is a VERY different scenario than an older computer running older operating system software. That system may very well NOT run today's software, even if it were otherwise compatible to the OS, for a variety of reasons.

This is, in many ways, akin to the old cliche, "That's a nice camera! Bet you take great photos with it!" It also implies that since a D300 is an old camera, it can no longer function very well as a camera, which is patently false.

My choice would be the D5300 that has 24MP and built-in GPS and is selling at the bargain price of less than $500 brand new and with the full Nikon warranty.

On the contrary! Using the D300 was pure joy from the 1st 10 clicks. I couldn't believe how great it was so I had to keep shooting to convince myself I wasn't dreaming

You know what the D5300 doesn't have? An in body focus motor... So most of the OPs lenses would become manual focus only. As such, a D300 would still be a better bet for most people.

Re: used D300 or new D3300?

I have a D300 and love it, I previously had a D50 which was great as well. You say you used to take lots of pictures. Does this imply that your photography is not as frequent? Or is it the D100 is no longer good enough?

Whilst the D300 is excellent it is now a bit dated in respect to the sensor. Where it is excellent though is in the manual controls and build quality. These are the reasons I bought one. Plus the commander flash and overall 'feel'.

For your usage I would suggest the D3300 it has an exceptional sensor, get it with the 18-55 zoom and it will make a great travel camera. Which would seem to be your primary use. Out of camera jpegs will also be far better than the D100.

These are just my thoughts, you need to handle both and make your choice.

Good luck

Peter

Puttin, what was the KEH used condition rating assigned your D300s when you bought it? Was it EX, EX+, LN-? I'm curious to know as I'm in the market for a D300s right now.

Yesterday, I was looking the local classified and came across a D300, enquired the seller about shutter count and was surprised to learn that it is under 3000. Simply could not resist and bought it for $300. Yes indeed it was very nicely kept, no ding-dong, all dials and buttons nice and tight, it looks brand new..

since yesterday, I was worried if I have been stupid to buy this instead of a D3300, but after reading this thread.. I feel good and convinced.. no it was not a bad decision. Thanks to all those who have weighed in for the OP.

Since you've got a D700, the D300 makes even more sense (IMHO).  They're a nice matched pair.  Enjoy.
