Wide Angles on NX1
1

No Wide Angle for Indoors Shooting or establishing shots is a major hole in my lens Line up...

I've been researching and discovered four possible options...

1. NX 10mm 3.5

2. NX 12-24mm 4.0

3. Samyung Manual?

4.Wide angle adapter on my NX 30mm 2.0 pancake?

After looking around 10, 11, 12mm seems to be my sweet spot. Anything lower the distortion starts looking goofy for my tastes

I think Im leaning toward the NX 10mm but the distortion is a little extreme on some shots I've seen but I believe you can fix it in premiere or after effects (an effect called optics compensation)

The NX10 Appears to be available for $199 on Samsung parts.

The NX 12-24mm looks OK but its probably overkill as I will only ever use it at 12 and I already have 16-210mm covered in my lens collection

It appears to be available on Samsung Parts for $300

If it doesn't look like crap on 4k Id be into converting my NX30mm 2.0 or my Nikkor 50mm Manual 1.8 Into wide angle if I could knock them to 12 mm Id be happy. In fact It would be very cool to have a fast 2.0 12mm with auto focus if I adapted my 30mm (but Im sure even the best wide angle adapter would knock me down a stop or two)

Anyone know of a good quality wide angle converter? anyone have video of it in action?

My max budget is $350ish for any of these options.

Just thinking or typing out loud to see if anybody has any thoughts or options I haven't considered yet...

1. Very good and sharp lens, but it is a fish eye, you can do things in post. I am waiting mine to arrive, but I want it for the fisheye effect anyway, and use it with NX500 4K crop.

2. Very sharp wide open, I use it as a walk around "kit" lens these days (especially with the NX500) as I mostly shoot in 12-24(!) anyway or more than 50mm. It is a zoom, so it is a good thing that you have the 2X focal length options, plus it is really small and light for an ultra wide zoom lens. It seems very plastic-ly build though, and my rings are somehow not turn properly, but nothing serious, really. Other people I know have no complaints about the rings.

3. There are a lot of threads about it, seems like a really good option as well, I decided I needed the 12-24 more.

4. NO!

This should really be a very easy decision because the 3 lenses are so different.

Like the fisheye look or want to travel very small and light and are willing to remove distortion? NX fisheye

Like the convenience of a zoom and don't care that it doesn't have wide apertures? NX 12-24

Want a wide angle for low light? Samyang 12mm f/2

I consider them different enough that I own all 3.

This is so true, and I agree with your comments for each one of them, but I would like to mention that I remember the Samyang 12 (used on other mount) wasn't that (if any) smaller than the 12-24 (I didn't have the NX lens back then, so I couldn't make a direct comparison) and had to be significantly stepped down to achieve maximum sharpness, but it is a f/2 nevertheless and ideal for astrophotography as well. I have also used the 14mm Samyang, and a few full frame ultra wides, but those 3 options are quite alright for most things (money, weight and size - wise).

Honestly, I would be glad to see the rumored NX S ultra wide zoom, and that would have been a certain buy, but this was never an option.

Ditto! I recently bought the Samyang (not easy to find in black) form an on-line store in Poland. Really pleased with it, in fact I prefer it to the 12-24mm

I have the fisheye. You can correct the distortion 100% post process. I'll get you some sample shots of the difference between the 16-50 s lens at 16 and a fixed 10mm shot

Re: Wide Angles on NX1

I disagree about the samyang/rokinon 12 f2. It's an excellent lens and is sharper at f2 than the Samsung 10 is at f3.5.

Imo if you are looking for a wide angle lens for the nx system and desire any kind of low light specs the rokinon is the only way to go.

I haven't received my 10mm yet (so, I can not tell), I was reffering to the 12-24 zoom, which is impossible for the Samyang to be equally sharp wide open, except if the copy I used wasn't that good, I guess that is a possibility too, but I do not think so. At 4 is already very sharp, at 5.6 is excellent. Maybe the 12 achieves maximum sharpness at half a stop earlier.

The option of shooting at 2/f is a big advantage of course, but during the day, for landscapes and architecture, the apperture advantage of the Samyang is not that great.

It is a different lens though, and very welcomed, but now, for the use I do, it seems that I am covered for the foreseeable future.

Re: Wide Angles on NX1

Hi All thanks for the input so far... I've been looking about more and Im really starting to lean toward that Samyang / Rokinon 2.0

I've come across one on the net for a very cheap price but its a Sony E mount.

been looking around but it seem there is no adapters for Sony E to Samsung NX...

Is this a possibility or should I move on?

Move on. If you want that lens for your NX you'll have to buy the NX version; there are no adapters for any of the other mounts.

Move on. If you want that lens for your NX you'll have to buy the NX version; there are no adapters for any of the other mounts.

This specific lens is mirrorless only, so you have to buy the right version. For other Samyang/Rokinon/Wallimex full frame lenses, you can buy and adapt.

It seems you forget Sigma 8-16mm - widest possible "non-fish eye" lens for APS-C on the market... about 12mm equivalent.

I just bough one with EF-S mount... I had to wait on new adapter (NX-EF) because old KIWI had problem with infinity focus on 8mm. It seems that new one is OK but I have to test it more (and compare with Samyang 12mm...)

The NX 10mm isn't just crazy sharp, it will get you shots you just can't get with anything else.

Wow what a great image... you did do some Distortion correction, correct?

Im just Seeking out the top 3 options and if I find a offer too good to pass Ill get it.

Found an old comparison between NX10mm and Rokionon 8mm ...  says with the NX 10mm you can damn near touch the glass with a subject and i will be in focus....

http://erphotoreview.com/wordpress/?p=4930

Gonna keep my eye on eBay for a bit and if nothing sways me Ill go the sammy parts route...

also considering avoiding the NX 12-24 all together...there seems to be quite a few reports on google about them "falling apart"with light use...(really???!!)

not a good sign if like me.. your hording lenses and batteries with the intent to use this system for the foreseeable and unforeseeable future...

again thanks for the great example

I believe the later NX 12-24 has been fixed. At least mine did not have a problem and I have taken it to quite a few trips already.

I have Fisheye-Hemi (PS plug-in) and I can't remember if I used it on the Mesa Arch image (above) or not.  Some images just look great without correction.  I've found Hemi retains sharpness at the corners/edges.

An example - leave the fisheye effect ----

Yep. I use mine for macro sometimes, it's just a fun lens to experiment with.  This bee was about an inch from the front element.  You need to take care not to touch something that could damage the element - it's easy to get closer than you should.

I like the FL of the 12-24 (I had lots of fun with the Panny 7-14 on a GH3) and I think the breaking-apart issue is in the past, from what I've read.  I'd jump on the 12-24 except with a camera like the NX500 I really like the pancakes.  The NX 10mm is so small and light!

And don't listen to those clowns who say you need a tele lens for wildlife - that's what fisheyes are for.

What do you guys think of the Tokina 11-16mm with adapter?

Been going back and forth with that and the Rokinon 12mm f2.0?
