There is a distinct difference at the widest apertures (1.4 and 2.0). The new II version has no chromatic aberration and is distinctly sharper. By f2.8 the difference is slight and at f4.0 there is no difference.

However, in practice the differences are quite subtle. There are various comparisons between the two lenses on this site that are worth looking at. I think you will agree that comparing them requires a lot of back and forth.

Because the differences are subtle and because I already own the older version and would have to take a huge hit selling it used, I decided to keep it. Here are a few pictures shot with the original 35mm f1.4 wide open. You can decide whether the results are noticeably inferior.

Based on what I saw, the advantages of the 35 f1.4 II would never be realized in your style of photography. You just wouldn't see a difference. Save your money and continue on as you are.

Tony you ought to know by now you cannot just what you are going to get by looking at the final result on a Monitor.  You have to look at the end result on the final print.  That end result will vary on the size of the final print too.  You need to get you some samples images shot under different lighting conditions and makes some Larger Prints and then you will get a good idea of what results you are getting and if its worth it.
