T5i to T6i video bit rate worse? What the heck!? Why?

I just found the T5i video bit rate is faster than the T6i. Is that bad?

Both use the same compression codec

T5i is rated 330 MB/min or 44Mbits/sec
T6i is rated 216 MB/min or 28.8Mbits/sec

Does that not mean the video on the T3 to T5 is better than the T6? That's crazy!

Can anyone comment on that?

Re: T5i to T6i video bit rate worse? What the heck!? Why?

I think I found my own answer.

T6 records in mp4 format while T5 records in mov format. mov files can be 10x as large. mp4 files are much smaller and therefore don't need as high a bit rate transfer for exactly the same lossy compression settings.

Overall there is no quality loss. mp4 is just compressed better and doesn't need a higher transfer rate.

There are people who have gone to Nikon and Sony over this issue when they were considering the T6 because of this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7mrckV4MrI

No one cares to comment? I guess video isn't a concern here.

For anyone's interest, 29 Mbit/sec, is at the upper end of high-definition TV bitrates.

Canon's response
1

Response from Canon was they mentioned the Canon EOS 1Dx shoots at a bit rate of 235MB/min and better codec compression in the newer cameras allows for smaller bit rate transfer for similar or better image quality.

Actually just confirming what I researched above.  No need for anyone to change their decision, you won't get better video quality out of the T5i compared to the T6s.
