What is the successor to S120 ?

I've been through owning the S90/S95/S100 and more recently the S120. All great camera's (though S120 was not a major upgrade). I've waited a few years for the S130 ?? Now I'm looking at a huge variety of Powershot class cameras but not sure which is the true successor in the line.

My main desire is dynamic range and RAW. Similar size is a must as well (I have a DSLR for other images).

So what is the successor to the S120?

Closest Canon camera is Powershot G9X.

There hasn't been a 1/1.7 sensored camera in quite a while. I think the closest is the G7X.

Do you see another S120-sized largish-sensor Canon, besides the G9X?

Before you ask, I've made this jump and it's totally worth it.

Yes I'm well aware -- feature nothing new for Powershots.  IQ wise, better to shot RAW, PP and do your "cropping" of image.

Yes, it is just to stress that G9x does not loose that much of flexibility compare to S120.

Seriously doubt anyone was. For myself G9 X's lack of 24mm equiv more an issue than the shorter optical tele focal length. At this time if my S110 died I'd get the G9 X as a replacement at its the closest as to size/ weight of the S110.

S120 does not need a successor, it is that good.

This line of cameras S90/S95/S100 is so successful that there is not much Canon can improve without sacrificing something (weight, size, price, etc).

My S100 is my everyday all the time with me camera. Used to be my underwater camera too (low light), but now I use G7x for that.

BTW you have RAW in s120.

You're joking, right?

If the S-series was so successful, Canon wouldn't just stopped it as they did. They would find something very small to improve every year or so, so we can keep feeding them our money for that precious upgrade. The problem is, after RX100 became popular, the public no longer desired just a small and capable camera. The public desired an 1" small and capable camera.

Plus, unless I'm very much mistaken, the S120 is already out of production.

After I've made the jump to the G9X, I haven't touched the S120, the difference is that great. At first I thought I'd keep the old camera to use it here and there, but now I don't see the point. I see you have the G7X, so you should understand my point.

Not for all of those that suffer from GAS.

Just look at amount posts by users asking year latter after model released when will update be released.

Intend on using my S110 until it dies -- then I'll start looking for a replacement.

Answer:  The G9X -- a GREAT camera!  That's what to get.  It is the successor to the S series.

I previously had an S95 for years, and took thousands of pictures with it.  I loved that camera!  Small, goes anywhere, wonderful pictures.  But then, it kind of died, with some kind of "lens error."

Just then, Canon released the G9X.  I shopped around, looking at other compacts that shot raw.  In particular, I tried the Sony RX100m4 several times.  It made good images, but:  its size is really quite bulky and clunky, definitely not your pocket size camera, except for big pockets. And the menu structure is definitely not user friendly.

Size is important for me in a compact camera.  I want an easy to carry, inconspicuous, goes anywhere kind of compact.  The G9X is that.  It's about the same size as the S series cameras, slips easily into and out of jeans pockets, and doesn't raise eyebrows in a crowded place.  Quite unobtrusive, like a cell phone camera.

And the pictures are EXCELLENT!  The raw images have much more depth than the S series, and the resolution is fairly amazing for a little camera.  The iso range is way above the S series also.  The colors are natural and well saturated.  And many more praises.  The G9X is a brilliant camera, plain and simple.

I absolutely love my G9X.  So far, I love it even more than my old S95, and that's saying something.  Highly recommended!

Actually I am not joking. Whatever Canon does or "public" wants have nothing to do with what I need (most of the time).

My S100 is small and powerful.  G7x is too big and heavy in comparison. I bought it because of 1" sensor that is great to have in low light underwater.  It sits in my drawer waiting to go diving while S100 is always with me. I am almost sorry I bought it, except it is good to have an extra set up on dive vacations.

As you may notice my equipment is pretty old.  It is that way because I do not see any practical advantage in upgrading it.  UPGRADES WILL NOT HELP ME TO SELL MORE PICTURES. My photographic and business skills will.

I think the question is more "Is there a better tool that will allow me to take better pictures?" than "Is there a better tool that will make me take better picture?"

Dude, I was just responding to your absurd statement "S120 is so good that it doesn't need a successor". I don't care what do you work. I was just pointing out an obvious flaw in your logic.

Good luck selling those pictures.

Probably none is correct.

What is the criterium of "better picture"? In whose eyes? My criterium may be different from my wife's, my clients... yours.

The picture I took 10 years ago I thought was crap, but forgot to delete, today is a masterpiece to me because I just collected $250 for it. Where does it stop?

Very many variables, none has anything to do with equipment.

Well, one picture doesn´t have to be better for everyboy. It´s enaugh if it´s not worse, and it´s better for some. And I believe G9X delivers exactly this.

The picture I took 10 years ago I thought was crap, but forgot to delete, today is a masterpiece to me because I just collected $250 for it. Where does it stop?

People often pay for crap. That doesn´t make $hit out of the crap.

Very many variables, none has anything to do with equipment.

For some...
