Backcountry skiing in Austria

Some from last week in Austria for C&C

This is a difficult winter season with little snow at low altitude, high temperatures and a high avalanche risk.

Thanks for your comments,

Steven

Looks like some good snow there.

Did some back country split boarding last year... didn't realise how much of a workout it gives you doing the cross country thing!

I find taking photos in these conditions really challenging - quite hard to make them pop/ look as good as they do in your minds eye.

Agree, it's always challenging. Hard to compose in bright sunlight, hard to set exposure to suit the vast contrast, hard to see through foggy viewfinders/glasses, hard to dial in the pola filter, hard to wake up frozen fingers. But I love the output when things come together.

Cheers,

Rick

Good photos and yes, challenging conditions.

A question for Thin_ice: what white balance setting did you use?

I tend to use the "cloudy" or "shade" settings as auto can result in a blue tint in the shadows.

auto WB, but i try to meter on anything else than snow. Only a handfull of the shots were to cold in my opinion.

Do you think the shadows in these suffer from blue tint due to auto WB fail?

Nice!  They look like they could have been taken in the Colorado Rockies.

The first shot reminds me of my one and only challenge winner here at DPR: http://www.dpreview.com/challenges/Entry.aspx?ID=811721

My kids  were to fast and the youngest one is going " gopro". I was under time pressure because of warm temperatures and the snow was getting a bit moist.

But you are right!  Next time I will do a tour planning that includes time and a safe spot to take shots of the descent.
