Pen-F, Pro Lenses and tripod plates

Per the Imaging Resources review, can anyone further expand on any potential issues of using the Pen-F with the pro lenses and a tripod plate?  Ideally, RRS would take this into consideration when producing their inevitable L-plate...but just wondering if anyone has an issue as of yet.  I'm guessing the Olympus Grip with Arca-Swiss plate may be built to take this into account??

Thanks!!

While we're on the subject of tripod sockets, here's another one of my little complaints about the PEN-F: the tripod socket is located too close to the lens mount. On the base of the camera, the tripod socket is right up at the edge below the lens mount. Given that there's not much space between the lens mount and the base of the camera, the placement of the tripod socket can make it difficult or nearly impossible to mount larger lenses, such as the 12-40mm or 7-14mm Zuiko PRO lenses for instance, while a tripod plate is attached. Smaller diameter lenses, like a number of their compact primes, work just fine with tripod plates, as they don't encroach below the edge of the camera. Adding the optional grip attachment raises the base of the camera and helps when mounting larger-diameter lenses.

Re: Pen-F, Pro Lenses and tripod plates

I tried the 12-40 and I couldn't mount it on the tripod plate. I am hoping to solve this problem by ordering the grip. Since you need to use the tripod for the Hi-Res mode I hope it works.

That means my Manfrotto QR plates are not going to work. Ergo...new ballheads and a monopod swivel.  But not that big a deal...probably best to change to the prevailing favorite anyhow.

Looks like the grip can be use as plate as well, but L plat....the 300mm F4 Pro has a built in Arca Swiss plate as well...so it seems that Olympus is adopting Arca Swiss is standard plate.

This is a problem on the EM5ii too. My solution is a mini Arca plate:

It works well; the only downside is that it has no safety screws.

However, the PenF seems to have take tripod placement to an even sillier extreme, so I'm not sure it would work.

That is a plate set, not an L bracket...which was the original question. I believe RRS makes these sets for bodies for which they do not yet make L brackets.

I called RRS and there are 2 forms of L plates...the traditional 1-piece L bracket (maybe an old term, too) and the newer modular 2-piece plate set.  You are right, both do the same thing...just one is a single piece the other is a 2 piece set.

The part that they have not yet released for the E M1 is a grip which may also be the base plate for the L plate set...I didn't ask as I have the battery grip.

The Joben ballhead(s) look like what I'm going to need to replace my Manfrotto head with their proprietary QR plates.  RRS heads get pretty pricey.

They have an L-brakcet for the Pens 1-3 (I own one for the 3)...I understand that the Pen-5 will fit on the Pen-3 Bracket as the camera's are basically the same size

I do not really understand the Olympus engineering here, due to the fact that the Hi-Res mode requires the tripod...and the Pro lenses are, well...Pro lenses.

Thanks in advance!

The E-M1 doesn't need the "grip" à la E-M5 because it has its own already. Arca Swiss is the way to go.

Yes but if you don't use the HLD-7 the RRS BOEM1 plate can stay on the camera as an extra part of the grip.
