Re: Butterflies in Flight part 2

Thanks trevor, yes they are all wild. I just shoot them on the walking trails or just off the tracks on my way to birding at my local nature reserve.

There are dangers here too, This 60cm red bellied black snake was 5cm from me stepping on it while shooting a dainty swallowtail butterfly. It warned me but didn't bite but disappeared so quickly I couldn't get a better shot of its head than this. I also came across a larger one of about 1.6m long while shooting the birds

Extremly venomous but tends to run away more often than raise its head

Impressive!

What's the best way to catch these in flight? Are you following them around with C-AF? Do you prefocus and burst?

Co-asking...

These are brilliant. And the snake shot is hair raising stuff.

CAF + tr for the most of them seems to work good. A little better than CAF from experience so far. Need to experiment more. I only started shooting them so I'm yet to decide exactly what is best.
Pre-focus is very important because you don't want lense hunt. As soon as your locked you must fire a burst, any delay and they are out of focus a lot of the time. Maybe CAF+tr behaves more eratic but I think they way these insects fly it needs to jump more often.

Clever stuff

So good Vas, this and part one which I'm just catching up with here. SUEPRB work and probably the best in flight butterfly shots I've seen, certainly in the quantity you nail them, that's fine work Vas. The best way for me to get them is with a 300mm and then crop in, but these are better than what I have so far for sure.

All the best Vas and top work.

Danny.

Thanks Danny
I would have been happy with just a few keepers but it got addictive for a while. I have shot a few more since but lately its lots of different Dragonflies in flight, some with pretty detailed eyes too and a heaps of birds in flight regarding things that fly. When I get through the backlog of photos i'll post them.
