700D v 450D

I've just upgraded to the 700D (+18-55STM) - seems a lot to assimilate.  Anyone done similar like to list a handful of most useful new features they have found in practice?

Re: 700D v 450D

Anthony,

you will be very happy with 700d but you have to work it

I have over 35 years with new cameras at every step, and learned continuously

recently: in the last ten years;

450D 7D 5D3 7D2 D810

secret: take pictures, not 270 not even 2,700 rather 27,000 and come back to talk about

And, I would suggest you to be more selective, (I've checked you gallery; to be gentle; you get excited rather easy)

if you take this friendly advice adversely please disregard it

I post a few 450D pictures

You will do far better with 700d, be confident and work to achieve it

PS if for some reason I posted a picture taken with another camera than 450d please be sure was not any kind of intention; I Have over 100,000 pictures

It's not my Gallery gallery - they are photos that have have come up in discussion on DPR eg an old photo for rescue, 1st curtain v 2nd curtain example, a DOF using settings someone said wouldn't work, etc.  Very few of my photos are on-line and usually behind password protection.  The Robin however is one of my "Gallery gallery" and one on which any comment would be considered.

Congrats on the new kit Anthony! That's a very capable camera. Here are a couple of ways that I squeeze the most out of my (newer) Canons.

As counterintuitive as it may sound, the extra FPS can help you take better Low Light photos (in addition to helping with fast action, etc). I like to shoot bursts when camera shake might be an issue, as there will always be one image that turns out sharper than the rest. I gain at least a stop in handhold-ability by shooting this way (vs shooting just a single frame at a time). Try it. I like to call it "Poor Man's Image Stabilization."

And speaking of low light, in the right situations give Handheld Night Scene a go (or even better yet Multi-Shot Noise Reduction, as it's more customizable). The ISO gets bumped up in order to help with handhold-ability (speeding up your shutter speed), but then the real magic comes when the camera shoots a burst and does a subtractive kind of noise reduction on the images. The processor then automatically aligns the images and stacks them, resulting in a much cleaner image overall than you could have with taken with just a single shot at that ISO. And although it was primarily intended for static scenes, I still like to use it for subjects that might be moving too (such as when out clubbing!). It deals with motion by using the first frame as the registration frame, and anything that moves in the subsequent frames gets deleted out. It really knocks me out that the processor is capable of such wizardry, but again give it a try and see if it extends your own photographic capabilities.

There's of course a heap more that this camera can do. Like O'G says, go out and shoot a Ton of pictures (I put 10,000 shots through my 650D in the first month). And don't be afraid to try some of the features in more unconventional ways! Such as burst mode paired with Autofocus for MACROS??!!! HeHe

650D with 300mm f/4L IS and 25mm extension tube.

Or BIFs after sunset (with a non-stabilized lens!).

650D with 400/5.6 @ 1/80 second, ISO 1600

Oh yes, here's a sample using the aforementioned Handheld Night Scene...

650D with 18-55 IS II kit lens. 1/20 sec @ ISO 4000. Click on "original size."

So go out. Have yourself a shoot-fest with the new camera. And post back some pictures!

R2

Re: 700D v 450D

Thanks R2 - just got a lot on my plate at the moment (new house + overseas trip coming up).  I hadn't  intended to upgrade just yet but my 18-55 died and there was a double Canon cashback deal on the 700D + 18-55STM - last day when I went into town to do look at replacement lenses.  So a bit of an impulse buy but £100 off and another £50 when I take in the 450D made it seem quite a good deal.  A shame they didn't have the 18-135 in stock as a kit.

Anyway - the pointers will save me some time - I'll take the manual to read on the 18hr journey coming up and hopefully will have some decent photos by the time I get back.  Just got a couple of larger SD cards (64 and 32) to help me out.  Not tried any video yet but if it works then it'll sound the death knell for the old Panasonic with its Digital Tapes and Firewire connection.

What are you finding difficult to assimilate?  I had a 450d and now shoot a 760d.  There are very few differences with the exception of better resolution and better autofocus.  I would guess you never mastered the 450D and need to spend time learning the basics of photography.

Where did I say "difficult to assimilate"?  If you'd like to respond to my question that might be of more help rather than presumptions about by knowledge of the basics of photography, or even the 450D with which I've shot the best part of 10,000 images most in RAW across a wide spectrum.

I've already had a few good tips which will help speed the transition to the additional features and hopefully will get some more from others who have found some of the additional features more useful than others.
