My hands on preproduction Canon 1D X Mark II
9

So, I have been given an offer you don't refuse to test for a couple of days preproduction version of Canon 1D X Mark II. To give you some background, I have and 2,5 years experience with 1D X and couple of lenses (8-15, 14, 16-35II, 50, 70-200/2.8L IS, 85/1.2L II, 135/2L, 200/1.8L, 300/2.8L IS) as an enthusiast sports shooter, so I think I can compare. You can check my website by following the url bellow.

Feel free to ask about what you want to know, however there are some remarks:

1. As of now I'm not allowed to publish any fullres images (nor RAW or JPG) and videos.

2. I don't have CFast2.0 card, so I cannot test some features I guess (for example buffer depth)

3. I was also provided with new Wi-Fi transmitter, but as I don't have any use of it, not sure if I can give you any opinion about it.

This is how you get the sample camera

Yes, excited to hear your review, especially how you think the new sensor performs compared to the pervious version. We're expecting to hear great things...

Congrats on having the camera.

I'm sure you will cover two questions most of the members want to know.

1) High ISO. How does it compare to 1DX (NR OFF). ISO's over 3200 would be great.

2) AF. How much better the AF is. Did Canon came up with brand new AF system or it's same as old one that works faster? The sensitivity to f/8 is tweaked one or the AF points are completely different. I know it may be hard to find this out. But your impression would be nice.

Oh and the full res images. We won't tell anyone

Great to hear you can play with the 1dx2.

I might be a potential user next year so I am wondering how good you can push up the shadows without showing significant noise.

Thanks for your feedback.

Cheers,

Max

Impressions #1

Very first impressions:

  • body virtualy feels the same in your hands, shaping for right middle finger is slightly better
  • shutter seems to have longer path before it reaches prefocus position, which is probably matter of habit
  • I can feel much stronger kick from mirror - 1DX is very gentle, 1DX2 is not
  • memory card door is spring loaded
  • with Sandisk Extreme Pro 160 MB/s Compact Flash memory card I was able to take 99 RAWs before slow down
  • Lightroom does not recognize the RAW format

Is 4K, 60p, and 800 mbps, the only 4K option in 60p?

How does it compare to 1DX/other Canons in terms of color output and white balance / color balance?

Re: My hands on preproduction Canon 1D X Mark II

I really, really want to know how it compares at high ISO (6400+) compared to the original 1DX. I know you can't publish photos, just your opinion would be nice. Shadow detail in contrasty light would be especially valuable due the the endless whining about "dynamic range."

I'd like a IQ comparison under contrasty normal light--ISO 200-400 compared to a normal FF camera (5D III, 6D or 1DX would be fine.) Again, the dynamic range question.

I assume the autofocus is stunning--please verify edge points.

Other than that, I sure this is a true flagship body, so don't worry about trivia. But if anything jumps out at you, pro or con, I'd love to hear it. I'm seriously considering buying two. Thanks!

One may argue that "publish" and emailing them to one or a few people are different things.

Why did you think that this remark contributed to the thread?

Because it seems you didn´t read carefully. One doesn´t need to contribute only to the thread, although my intention was to clear things fast and soon. How does open request for cheating and then trouble really contribute to our good enaugh members that they share info with us?

What crysis will that e-mailed image solve? Gosh, now we both are ruining it heavily. Sorry, I´m not writing here again unless I have more to say.
