All things being equal Samsung NX1 or Sony A77II (lenses)

All,

I have the Sony A77ii with the 2.8 16-50 and the 70-300 G II lens.  If all things were equal which is a better lens the Sony 2.8 or the Samsung 16-50 "S" lens and which would be better the Sony 70-300mm "G" II lens or the Samsung 50-150mm "S" lens?

The reason I ask is because I had the NX1 and returned it and after owning the sony for a few weeks I miss the NX1. I really trying to convince myself that I made the right decision returning the NX1.

The Samsung S lenses are both better than the Sony, but they are not equivalent lenses, especially since the 70-300mm is a 4.5-5.6 lens made for FF.

Sorry, I have to agree with pureaxis here. The A77II is one of only a fee Sony cameras I mostly like, it's quite a good camera so I wouldn't switch away from it lightly.

Neither is a bad choice, but I'd get the NX1

I had an A77ii and now own the NX1.   The A77ii is a very good camera, but is pretty noisy in low light.   I never understood why because DxO said it should be better.  But when I compared it to the NX1 at ISO3200 under the same conditions the noise was too prevalent for me.   For video the A77ii had a lot of issues too.  For example, if you want AF, you are forced to use F/3.5 even if you lens is F/2.8.  The NX1 on the other hand has 4K and 120FPS video.

There are good things about the A77ii too.  The 16-50mm F/2.8 zoom is very inexpensive, and there are some older Minolta lenses that are great values.  Most are too loud for video though.

Overall, I think the NX1 beats the A77ii in every category, so I would prefer the NX1.

Thanks,  When I had the NX1 I purchased the 16-50 PZ lens and the 50-200. I really wasn't happy the 16-50 for some reason (I guess I just didn't like the power zoom). The 50-200 seemed decent for photos (I actually compared a photo I took with it compared to the Sony 70-300 "G" II w/the same exact settings and I actually liked the clarity on the NX1 better). I unfortunately deleted all the test video that I took with the NX1  so I couldn't compare it to the Sony. As I have mentioned in another thread, I'm just not sure that the 50-150 would be enough focal length for video at college football games (taking marching band video of my daughter). I'm not try to take pictures of her face from across the field (I tried that with the cannon from across the field and trying to do that handheld created an almost impossible video to watch).

With the NX1 you get 4K video.  That is 4 times more resolution of the A77ii.   Cropping it down to 1080p  essentially doubles the focal length of the lens, and at the same time cropping allows for better centering of the subject.

I would say, that just enjoy what you have now. A77II is great camera, and its AF is better than smasung NX1 AF. Samsung has great AF if consider that it's mirrorless camera, but it can't fully compete with SLR-type phase detection AF system.

Also future of NX system is very uncertain.

I never thought about that, Hummm... I saw that mentioned somewhere but hadn't given it a second thought. I just googled it (you can tell I'm a noob) and there's an app for that (at least to play with) on the train.  This just may push me over the edge and go back to the NX1. I'm going to have to try that in Premier Pro this evening to see the results even using the Sony.  Thanks so much for the suggestion.

I thought the AF of the NX1 was better? I don't really know, I guess I'll have to do more investigation. As fas as the Future of the NX system goes, I had my last camera , a Sony F828 since late 2004 and that was fixed lens with no updates, so I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon (I have a house remodel to pay for). I would only want a wide angle lens as a addition and I would be all set.  If the AF on the Sony is better locking on subjects for video then I would stay with Sony.

I went form A77ii -> NX1. The NX1 is better is most but not every situation. Both are very good in all situations.

Neither mount has a safe future, but the NX1 will be competitive for a good 5 years, while the A77ii with poor high ISO results and lack of 4K video is already a step behind.  But I know people with 8 year cameras who are content.

I'll only be able to compare the a77II with the 16-50 2.8 vs. NX1 with the 16-50 f2-2.8. my main concern will be video subject tracking, face detection and quality of the cropped video output.

Remember too that while the NX1 can do that at F/2.0 with the short end of the zoom, the A77ii will always be stuck at F/3.5.   The 1+ stop of light and lack of SLT mirror will favor the NX1 in low light.

The NX1 came today. It already had 1.4 on it.   I was pleasantly surprised that it came with the battery. The 16-50 'S' lens is amazing.  the NX1 that I returned had the 16-50 PZ lens which was ok but this way way way better. I can only imagine how good the 50-150 'S' lens is.

My 50-150 is faster focusing and sharper than my 16-50s. Both are great lenses, but very much underrated

I'm happy you like the new camera! Please repprt about it more when you use it.

Thanks,  I'm still in test mode, but I did as someone suddested, shot some video, cropped it 20% in Premier Pro CC, exported it and to me it's clearer than the Sony a77II video shot under the same conditions. Though the Sony had the 16-50 2.8 lens and the NX1 has he 16-50 'S' glass. I can't wait to order the 50-150 'S' lens.

Just to finish out this thread, I have packed up the a77ii and ordered the 50-150 'S' lens.

I use both camera for my own today. For image quality in general i prefer NX1 over A77ii due to better pixel clarity.

The major issue for A77ii is its translucent layer which make pixel not too solid compare to NX1.

But for lenses, Sony glasses are exceptional even combined with NX1 body will deliver fantastic pictures.
