Dilemma in choosing which Format to buy Sigma 60mm F2.8

Hi,

I have a Panasonic GF3 and a Sony a3000, I own the Panasonic 14mm F2.5, Panasonic 25mm F1.7, Olympus 45mm F1.8 and the Panasonic 14-45mm Lens.

With the Sony a3000 I only have the kit lens.

I want to buy a Sigma 60mm F2.8 but I have not decided with format is should buy?

The m43 format gives me a 120mm reach where as the Sony e mount gives a 90mm reach.

On DXO the Sony E mount is rated higher on the e mount than on the M43 cameras.

I have not found a site that compares this lens in different formats, so I am not sure

which one to buy.

Any feedback would be welcome, especially if anybody has both the M43 and E mount lens.

Thanks

Not sure its worth it for either format for you.

You already have a nice lineup of primes for the m43's camera. The extra reach on the Sigma 60mm doesn't seem worth it (and I say that as someone who owns and loves that lens on my EM10).

It comes down to which camera do you more enjoy shooting with. If you like shooting with the Sony, then it could be worth getting the sigma. If you like shooting the Panny more, I'd probably forgo the Sigma, and possibly pick up a Panny 45-150mm.

I bought TWO 60mm Sigmas, one to use on NEX-3N and one to use on m43.  Great on both.

Then you can use it with smart adapters on both!

Looks simple to me...

Which is what you should be expecting, considering that it's the same lens, but on sensors with different resolution. Obviously, the same lens on 24mp sensor should get better scores than on 16mp sensor (12mp in your case). That is, if the lens is good. And this Sigma is simply an excellent lens (in both mounts).

If you look at DxO, that little Sigma is the single best lens for Sony E mount. It even scores higher than much more expensive FE lenses. It's that good.

I have not found a site that compares this lens in different formats, so I am not sure which one to buy.

Why does it matter? It's the same lens, it will perform roughly the same. On MFT, you will have no vignetting compared to Sony E version and there might be slight difference in chromatic aberration, but it will be minimal on both cameras either way.

Look at it this way. Sigma 60/2.8 on your a3000 will be almost equivalent to Olympus 45/1.8 on your GF3 (within 2/3 of a stop). The only difference is that you'll have a bit more DoF control on Panasonic, but IQ will be noticeably superior on a3000 (that lens can fully take advantage of that 24mp sensor, not to mention it's very sharp right off the bat).

So if you want the same as GF3+45/1.8 but with better IQ, go for the E mount version.

Buy the MFT version if you want to add something new to your arsenal. But to be honest, it doesn't make any sense to me. It's a bit too close to 45mm and a bit too slow to offer something truly new. And if you crop the image from a3000, you will be able to get the same result as with GF3 with the same lens. So there's zero reason to go for MFT version. Unless you simply dislike to use your a3000 and much prefer your Panasonic. but since you still have both, I assume this is not the case.

So in short, I would get a Sony E version. This would finally let you use that a3000 to it's fullest (at least in terms of image quality). I would also probably sold the 45/1.8 if I were you. Why keep the gear that does the exact same thing?

No such thing

This lens is designed for mirrorless systems and is only available in MFT and Sony E mounts.

But for FF or APS-C lenses available for both EF and MFT mounts (like Samyang lenses for example), I totally agree.

You already have the 45mm

Since you already have the 45mm, I don't think the 60mm is worth it.

60mm on the A3000 = 90mm, but at f2.8. So it won't be as fast as 45mm f1.8 is on the Panasonic, even with the larger sensor.

If you put the 60mm on the Panasonic, you just get another similar short telephoto prime. It's a little longer and a little slower, but it's going to take similar kinds of pictures.

In short, it's redundant no matter which camera you put it on.

if you want to spend some money, perhaps an upgrade to your Panasonic?  A newer Panasonic sensor can easily keep up with that Sony A3000 and make all your m4/3 lenses perform a little better.  Maybe even sell that A3000 to help pay for it, since you don't have the lens kit for it.  Might I suggest a GM5 as a nice replacement for the GF3?

Ah, ok, thanks.

I was going off my Sigma 150 APO 2.8 macro  that I do use on both M4/3 and E mount (plays up  on most of my various E mount adapters).

I was considering selling this lens but lately I am thinking of keeping it especially for AF use on M4/3 but also MF use on my A7s.

Re: Dilemma in choosing which Format to buy Sigma 60mm F2.8

I have the Sigma 60mm in E-mount (for NEX-6). I haven't used or handled the Pana GF3.

Since there is no stabilization in your Sony or your Panny or the Sigma, would it be of benefit to choose the lens format of the camera which produces better results at higher ISOs?

Re: Dilemma in choosing which Format to buy Sigma 60mm F2.8

Thank you all for your replies. As many have recommended, since I have already similar lenses.

I have come to the conclusion that it is best not to purchase the Sigma 60mm F2.8.

Thanks again for all your replies.

It is possible to mount M4/3 lenses on Sony E mount, using a thin, dumb adapter.

http://m43photo.blogspot.com/2013/06/using-micro-four-thirds-lenses-on-sony.html

However, you lose the ability to control the aperture and the focus.

Due to the small difference in register distance, there is not going to be a "smart" adapter any time.
