Flare ?
Of course, one should expect massive flare in a shot like this.

Honestly, that's not all that bad.

Later that evening, left on a tripod doing a timelapse while we climbed to the top of this formation.

STOP IT! You are really making me regret selling the P14 (just last week). Please pm me on how you did this. It's amazing. The flare is really nice too. Adds a bit of distinction to the shot!

Yea I like shooting into the sun, the flare gives some drama.  It's a big blob when the lens is open and you get some crazy starbust when stopped down.

I've only seen flare from sun outside the frame when when stopped down

An hour or two later and the sun is setting

Lightroom

The EXIF has the settings, the PP was basically this plus a cool white balance for the blue sky, and local warming on the rock/ground. Shooting this underexposed was an accident, but there's not much difference between ISO 800 +2 stops compared to ISO 3200, especially considering my main audience is Facebook and Instagram.

The idea was to do a LiveComposite star trail while my friends and I climbed up the middle of the formation (~150 feet). That way our headlamps would light up the path we climbed while the stars trailed above us. I opted to do the composite manually in case someone walked by with a bright light and ruined the whole image, so I used the timelapse feature. In the end the composite was a bit busy but I really liked a couple of the stills. I also made a video from the photos which is in the end was my favorite product. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYLsdYclffw&feature=youtu.be

Don't forget the banding

I gave it, I love it and you don't get banding on my EM1.  Against the OP request it is the best fit, but do Google to find out which bodies you can get banding on.

12-32 zoom

a good copy is sharper than a fair few of the primes and it ZOOMs, stays sharp edge to edge end to end and has OIS which IMO is a lot more use than the diff between F2.5 and F3.5 (or even F1.7 and F3.5 given now poor the edges are on the Panny 20mm at wide apertures) ..

I stopped using my superb copy of the 14mm F2.5 and the 20mm got relegated to F1.7 only use after getting the 12-32

Except that far from being a pancake, it`s not even a normal lens - LOL - it`s an 8MM Fisheye

Hi everybody!

In a few days, a GX8 will be in my hands.

I'll order a Panny 7-14, 12-35, 45-175 and...I want the best pancake or the smaller lens I could get for just a walking around or just for those moments I just want to bring the smaller photography kit I can. Let's say, just the camera and the smaller lens.

I do want quality. I'm pretty image quality demanding. Ok ok...I know... photography techniques count...and counts a lot! Lets pretend I know those stuff. LOL

I was considering the Panny 20mm 1.7, the Panny 17 1.7, less bright lens as 12-35 (It hasnt to be a prime) etc.

I know Panny 25mm 1.4 is great...but not that portable I guess...

What do you think, guys?

Thank you!

Hi, As the other respondents have pointed out the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is the best pancake prime although it is a bit slow to focus as the whole optical group and inner barrel move when focussing.

A word of warning about the Panasonic 45-175mm lens. It is quite nice optically but extremely prone to shutter shock. You must use the E-Shutter with this lens for general photography with shutter speeds in the range 1/30 -1/320 second (test yourself to be sure).

From the photo it looks like it is probably no thicker than the 20mm:

As others said, confider the 12-32. But if you do consider it, consider it with a GM1 attached . The combo can occasionally be had for the same price as a 12-32 alone. That is a really small and powerful combo.

Or indeed the 20mm, I love it on my GX7 (no $$$$GX8€€€€€).

Re: 17/1.8

So the current Olympus 17/1.8 is too big for you?  What about the Panny 15/1.7?

I don't think Olympus will be coming out w a third 17mm (unless it's an f1.2, which will be even larger)

Re: Best "pancake" lens?

If I'm out on the street or at a festival, I'll use the Panny 12-32 zoom on my PL7. If we move indoors to a café or pub, the Panny 14, 2.5 takes over. The combined cost of the pair of them didn't amount to $350, used.

Best pancake lens is the Lumix 20mm.

Actually, I see here that he specifically says the lens is as small as his 12-32mm pancake:

Sorry for my delay!

I finally bought a Panny 20 mm f/1.7 and love it.

I got this because of tons of reviews and thoughts.

Now, it is actually resting in my bag because of new Leica Nocticrom 42.5 f/1.2 and Summilux 25mm f/1.4, and you know, these are really beasts! But if I need good quality and portability, I take the 20 mm.

Someone posted earlier about a Prize winning photographer who did some awesome shots with the 15/1.7 so I assume it's a great lens. I have the 20/1.7 and love it.
