Why is it that Canon can't...

I've been a Canon shooter for a long time, though I do have Canon and other DSLR brands (Sony, Pentax, Nikon), of which I'm happy with most all.

Now that said, Canon needs to put a pair of glasses in every PowerShot box.

Along with my SLR's, I also have a couple of Canon point and shoot cameras.  An S90, SX40HS, a G16, and a little SX510HS.

BUT...what blows ALL of my Canon collection away for a clean, low noise, very nice sharpness, is an "old" (2005) recently pulled out of a drawer, Sony, DSC-W5 camera.  And if I'm not mistaken, the W5 is actually a step down (and obviously MUCH older) from at least two of the above Canons.  I haven't kept up with the Sony point and shoot cameras, but if the newer ones are like the old W5, Canon has a long way to go to catch up.  And I'm not talking $700 to $1200  point and shoot cameras..!  I'm talking mid-priced at best, same class as the old DSC-W5 Sony.  Too bad the oddball memory isn't available any longer..!

Would enjoy seeing a couple of full-res examples of the W5 vs G16 for example.

I'd say if you are comparing against a 5MP camera and cant make the others look better, the problem is you or your expectations.

I don't follow you.

Your post is all over the place.  You start with a header asking "why can't Canon...".  Can't what?  You never finish the question.  Then you throw out something about putting a pair of glasses in the box w/o elaborating on that point.  Finally you go on to compare a 2005 camera to newer cameras, w/o posting any samples to back up your argument.

The W5 was a very nice little compact in its day, with a nice lens, little optical viewfinder and lots of manual controls. The CCD sensor probably gives pretty clean images at low ISOs too. For on screen viewing and regular print sizes, I am sure it is more than good enough (I remember making some nice 8x10s with a 4mp Elph SD400 and 5mp Oly c5000).That said, I'd be shocked if after 10 years it keeps up a nice comparable compact. Would love to see samples!

They certaily can equal your Sony.  Try a Canon G5 from the same vintage.

The problem is your lack of understanding of factory defaults, how they differ, and what to do about it.  Defaults being the way the camera is set in the menu when it arrives, straight out of the box.  Sony's, especially back then bumped up contrast, color saturation, and sharpening to make images look sharper and make them jump off the screen.  With newer cameras, Canon uses softer default settings so the images don't have the "pop" of the Sony.  Learn how to best set your Canon's - they all have suitable internal adjustments, and you'll find the same kind of sharpness and color.

I'd rather have an A610

It takes AA batteries too!

My first couple of SZs took 4-AA and my last 3 took proprietary Li-ions and quite frankly I  prefer the latter.  That is as long as you carry a fully charged spare.

I don't like AA batteries because I find them much heavier to carry around than a lithium camera battery.

Chill Folks

I'm just playing along with the OP's nonsense.

I understand his sentiment is a tough sell on a site where most users have a serious case of gas, but sometimes using the old gear can be fun too!

I picked up a pair of Canon A520s for my nephews on craigslist for $20 each so they could have a camera to play with that would not be a loss when they inevitably broke them. In the meantime, they took plenty of shots, and printed out on 4x6 they look pretty close to what you would get from a new compact. I played with them a few times and they were indeed fun- small but still had a grip, OVF, lots of manual controls, etc. AAs were a plus for the parents, and output was lightyears ahead of the crappy plastic kids cams they sell in the toy stores.

I wouldn't trade my current camera for one of these guys, but they had their appeal- and with the price, flexibility and batteries, but I could see how something like this or the OP's W5 would make a nice toss around glovebox backup.

Please Olga!

4 AA weigh 3.6 oz.

2 lithium for my G16 2.8 oz.

You are so burdened by less than an ounce??

I much prefer AAs for a camera. It was much less expensive when that's what most cameras used for power. And you can still get AAs rechargeable.

I much prefer lithium-ion.  Whether using AA or li-ion, I always have at least one spare.  The difference with li-ion is that I only need one spare rather than 2 or 4 AA.  The charger for my li-ion is smaller than a charger for a set of 4 AA batteries.

However with a spare set you have 8- AAs and a somewhat bulkier charger.  They are cheaper and easier to come by but all considered for travel I do find the li-ion preferable.  I have lived with both types and still have one camera using  4/AAs.
