Canon SX60hs vs Canon SX710hs

I having been going back and forth trying to decide which one to purchase of these two cameras but cannot make up my mind. Will be making an Iceland trip soon, which means the potential for a lot of lower light photography. I also have to consider just the overall camera for everyday future use. If anyone can supply some great pros and cons between the 2 I could really use it. thanks.

I too would opt for the SX50 but that boat has probably sailed.  If you can live with a fixed LCD, no EVF and 30X zoom the SX710 may do the job but not a choice I would make for sure.  The SX60 is an all versatile travel camera and although I would avoid the long end of the zoom it is a very good all-in-one package.  The price has been high but slowly showing up on sale.  Perhaps a Canon SX60 referb or you might even luck out on that SX50.

Re: Canon SX60hs vs Canon SX710hs

I had an SX700HS, which disappointed me. It was very hard to get a sharp photo, especially at long zoom; and low light focusing was iffy at best. I replaced it with an SX60HS, which was considerably better than the 700. However, it's not a pocket camera.

I have since sold the SX60HS, and replaced it and my EOS 7D with a G3X; and I am extremely pleased. If you can go with the higher cost, the G3X is the way to go!  You will not be disappointed.

Same here.

I sold my SX50 and bought the G1XM2 and SX700.

Love the G1XM2 but very disappointed with the SX700 for the same reason as above.

Very difficult to get sharp images at long end for objects far away.

I'll be buying the G3X some time down the road.

Re: Canon SX60hs vs Canon SX710hs

Personally, I can't live without the tilt/swivel LCD screen (like my SX40, and like the SX60 has) for capturing different perspectives, especially outdoors (which is where these cameras function best anyway).

I do a lot of my shooting with the camera at waist height, looking down with the screen flipped up. And, being quite short, I would have missed out on a lot of shots if I couldn't flip the screen facing down to the ground and shot with the camera way over my head. Heck, even the fact that the camera sits by itself on a table and I can flip the screen up to me to preview shots while sitting at a cafe or something is incredibly convenient. A flexible screen angle can also make daylight shooting easier ... not that daylight is your strongest enemy in Iceland, though.

The other thing that you might appreciate, especially with all those landscape photos you're going to want to capture in Iceland, is that the range of the SX60 starts at 21mm equivalent, which is wider than most super zooms, and wider than the 25 of the SX710.

As others here have said, people here are fairly critical of the SX60 compared to the SX50 (and at times, even the old SX40!), but many people who aren't familiar with the older models don't seem as critical. For hand held zooming, the large, boxy shape is actually convenient, and the SX60 is definitely ergonomically pleasing. So were I choosing between those two models only, those are my reasons for picking the SX60 over the SX710.

Edited to add: I'm also (over!)due for a new camera, which I was SURE was going to be the SX60, and still might be... but now truth be told, I'm leaning towards the Nikon P900. So there may be some other camera besides those two that would work for you. But my points above still stand: I would 100% choose the SX60 over the SX710, in a head-to-head battle, no question.

Re: Canon SX60hs vs Canon SX710hs

Having owned the SX40/50/60 I agree that no tilt/swivel LCD, no EVF and less than a 50X zoom no sale. I sold the SX60 and await the SX70. If Canon goofs it up with a 70X zoom I will write the SX series off and --GASP---look at a Nikon.
