sport photography with 40-150 f2.8 lens

I have experience taking cross country ski photos and thinking of getting the 40-150 lens as an upgrade to my 50-200 lens to use with my EM1. Could I get people who have used the new 2.8 lens for action photography to comment on their results and experiences. Especially interested in the speed and accuracy of the autofocus and how the CAF functions.

An absolute treat to use and a big step up from the 50-200 in every meaningful sports performance category. Have used the combo for a full soccer season and am completely won over to the point I'll be queuing up for the 300.

Cheers,

Rick

It is a wonderful lens. All the below shots are with the GX7 which is ok but not the best Mirroless camera for Sports....

I'm no expert and have just bought the EM1 as I hope to do more sports.

The images look better on my computer than here but you get the idea.

Absolutely love mine and the focus is dead-on. I use mine primarily as portrait/event lens but have done some sports with it. From the few excursions I've had with the lens it never let me down. The focus speed in C-AF is far better than the other M4/3 lenses I've used (excluding the PRO lenses, which seem equal). It's focus doesn't even really seem affected in low light, as long as there is some contrast for it to grab onto.

Some shots of the few recent sporting events I've used this lens for.

It is good to hear such positive comments with sharp images to back it up. Does anyone have examples of CAF in use. I have found that the the 50-200 would often lose the focus with moving skiers but that may have been my inability to keep the sight on the skier.

I don't process sequences per se but in any soccer match I'll see several where the key player(s) remain in focus approaching or heading away from the camera. This is in high burst+CAF, which delivers 9fps with native lenses, about 6fps with 4/3 lenses. Focus will "breathe" at times, losing and reacquiring lock--something virtually all cameras do. There's a CAF lock setting that adjusts how easily the camera will shift to a different subject. Am still mastering that one and not entirely sure which setting is best for my needs.

Don Parrot's dog race threads are worth seeking out, as he's good at demonstrating E-M1 CAF.

Cheers,

Rick

I checked out the dog racing thread and his results with CAF were terrific. The thread I found was with the 30-200 and I assume the new 40-150 should perform even better with a m4/3 camera.
