35mm IS f2 Lens flare tips?

I'm wondering if anyone has a solution to eliminating lens flare in photos like these.

Admittedly, if lens flare is going to happen, this is where. I'm shooting right into the sun so it's not a surprise, and in any other shooting situation I cant find a flare. Mostly I dont like the small white dagger on the bottom of the frame. Is this something a lens hood will take care of? I'm not using one. Or maybe I am just SOL and shouldnt shoot into the sun with this lens. Any tips or feeback welcome.

I'm using a 5DSR and a Canon 35mm IS USM F/2

bottom right center

bottom left. small blue orb at the top right that is less noticeable

The Hood is the solution, protection for your lens, and protection against flare for your images. For my 35 I purchased the Hoya 67mm Rubber lens hood, I find these useful for many of my lenses and preferable in some cases to the Canon offerings.  As others have said, shooting straight into the sun, hood won't help much though.

No, the flare is from the light source, and that is inside the image frame. So the hood won't fix that. The hood will give a bit more contrast when the light source is outside of the frame and actually kept from the front element by the hood, and the hood is good for protection (bump protection, shock absorb protection in a fall).

I always use a lens hood, but a lens hood will do nothing when you shoot directly into a light source. About the only things you can do are:

1. wait for better light

2. use something (like a tree) to block the sun

3. do NOT use a filter

4. make sure the front and rear lens elements are clean

5. sometimes you can rearrange the composition so the flare hot spot falls in the glare of the light source.

Remove it in LR or PS.

That seems to be the option. I've already been cropping it out but i could remove it. I try to stay from editing so if rather it just not be there but oh well.

Looks like a prime candidate for HDR to me.

HDR would make it look worse.

Well, I am not suggesting combing complete layers and shooting without light modifiers.

Re: 35mm IS f2 Lens flare tips?

A filter or just covering the upper half with a hand  in the most exposed shot would help. On the other hand, a few seconds in LR can achieve the same effect.

The flare is not so bad here because it is well confined to one bright spot.

Frankly, I think flare is not an issue here at all, it's poor contrast and general washed out quality of the image.

I would not know about LR - I could never get that thing going.

Re: 35mm IS f2 Lens flare tips?

I am more concerned about my vision than flare. I avoid shooting directly into the sun, since I value my decrepit retina.

Incidentally, I always have the hood on my 35F2 IS. It is the normal position, even in storage. It will help to protect the lens and reduce flare when the light source is not in the frame. I find the 35F2 IS has good flare resistance. You should see the flare you can get from the earlier 35F2 without a hood. It was a purple monster flare machine. Keeping the hood on that lens, even in storage, is an excellent idea. The hood made the old 35F2 useful.

Exactly

No lens hood is going to stop that flare. But honestly, those two flares are not very hard at all the remove with PS.

I wanted to bracket but i only had a monopod and my friend was already growing impatient, as you can see if you look closely because hes almost walked out of frame.

It is washed out. This is a little closer to what I was seeing after a little PS.

Nice improvement!  I still find the white blob in the sky a bit distracting but the photo is now worth keeping.

I'm still new to using the 35 f2is but have read it is a bit prone to flare when shooting directly into the sun (as most lens are to at least some degree).   Some people even want the flare if shooting portrait shots into the light (I'm not sure where I stand on this style yet).

Most HDR software will account for small shifts during bursts for handheld bracketed sequences.
